Golf: Volvo Marbella Trophy
The Lagos course at Mijas was the venue for the latest Med Golf tournament held on Sunday 30th April, where over 50 golfers competed for the Volvo Marbella trophy on a perfect sunny day for golf. In what turned out to be another very tight finish, leading the way was Andy Griffin, closely followed by Jeff Richardson in second place and Dan Kenyon third. Jeff also took the top senior prize and is now one of the front-runners for the “senior player of the year” title. Apart from winning the sponsor’s crystal trophy, Andy now takes his place alongside Louis Calvente, Denny To, Nicky Sanchez, Russ Crawford and Frank Samways for the Med Golf Masters at Valderrama in November.
Julie Brewer was the top lady and amongst the other prizewinners was young Josh Jones who won the “star quality” award after narrowly missing out on the main prizes. This was particularly pleasing for his dad Kevin, who as Chief Executive of the sponsors presented the prizes. Father and son Fred and Philip Bootsma won the top team prize and Bill Aldridge the longest drive prize. Dan Aldridge had the best round with a gross 74 and Richard James the best score on the par 3’s. Nearest the pin winners were Dan Kenyon, Andy Griffin, Russ Crawford, Barry Coelho and Ian Griffiths.
The tournament season with invitations to Valderrama continues at Almenara on Sunday 14th May for the Johnnie Walker trophy, followed by the Aage Hempel Marine Electronics trophy in Morocco on Sunday 28th May, which is part of the Med Golf bank holiday itinerary.
