Rugby: Gibraltar lose their first league match to Portuense

Gibraltar's Rugby Club, lost their first encounter of the 2006/07 season to a strong Portuense side by 29 -10.

The leagues have this year been modified , which has unfortunately meant that Gibraltar have been automatically demoted to the new regional 2 leagues which are now categerised in Division A, B and C. Gibraltar has however, been placed in the A division which means they will play against the very strong sides of Marbella, Portuense and RC Malaga. Marbella played Malaga this weekend, with Marbella, who were disqualified last season from the first division, coming away with an 11-5 victory.

The following report is one taken from the Portuense website, which gives us a run down of Saturday's game. It basically acknowledges the hard work the Spanish side werer put through in order to claim victory.

We wish Gibraltar RC the best of luck in the forthcoming season and trust that they will be viying for promotion , back up to the Andalucian first division.

C.R.Atco. Portuense: David, Mel, Chesco; Alex N., Justin; Gaztelu, Maxi, Champi; Muñoz, José Alberto; Zamacola, Pelo, Gonzalo, Pedro Mera y Paco. También jugaron Óscar Navarro, Juanjo, Castro, Juanmi y Tejero.

Marcador: 7-0(Pelo + José Alberto); 7-5(Ensayo); 12-5(Pedro Mera) Fin del Primer Tiempo
19-5(Zamacola + José Alberto); 19-10(Ensayo); 24-10(Tejero); 27-10(José Alberto).

Pool & Snooker: Gibraltar association's busy schedule gets underway

After a long time in preparation the new premises down in Jumper’s Bastion, hosted its first two matches of the 06/07 season.

Team Queensway celebrated their first ‘home’ game in the new site with a 5 - 0 win over the Gibraltar Service Police.

Merv Padmore, back after a long absence from the game, beat GSP captain Alfred Becerra 52 points to 28. Kevin Dobson played and defeated Dylan Ballester, 38-6, in a clash of generations.

Kevin Dalli, new to snooker, but not to a cue, gave a stirling lesson how not to lose; eventually winning on the pink, at 56 to36. New boy, Neil McKelvey, showed excellent technique winning 71 to 24 over Chris Durante. The last frame pitched Team Queensway captain Eddie Newton up against youngster Ivan Viñales. Age will tell and Eddie finally won 50 to 32 on the pink. A clean sweep for Team Queensway!

Merv Padmore voted Man-of-the-Match by the GSP team. Leslie Bruzon was chosen star man by Team Queensway.

On table 2 nomads from the Mediterranean Rowing Club brought four-man Cue Ball to task, only to lose 2 frames to three.

Henry Vinet went down 35 - 68 to Jonathan Collado. Captain, for the night, Wilfred Smart was beaten 23 - 72 by the other captain Dylan Alvez, the Cue Ball’s Man-of-the-Match. Peter Buttigieg jnr, the Med’s star man, beat Tyrone Olivero 54 - 46; in a close-fought, black-ball frame. John-Joe Alvez lost 32-67 to Chris Schimidzu and Peter Buttigieg snr refereed brilliantly and got a walkover. Four points away from home for the Cue Ball.

Up on Flat Bastion Road, at the top of town, in the Astoria R&F Club, the Astoria A lost by four frames to one against St Bernard’s.

Adrian Navarro was beaten 40 - 66 by St Bernard’s Man-of-the-Match, Harry Ward and Elio Monteverde was overcome 17 - 72 by in-form Les Moore. Errol Bolaños gave Mukesh Bakhru a game before losing 42-45 on the black ball and the Astoria’s Star man Adrian Lima beat Fernando Monteverde 50-22. In the fifth frame Pepe Santos went down 13-48 to Adrian Wink.

Five points, away from home, for the ‘saints’.

In the north-end, on Devil’s Tower Road, reigning champions barentertainment.net beat the Astoria Too four frames to one.

Charlie Lara was beaten by Henry Bear 41 - 42 in a very close encounter of the Charlie/Henry kind. That would have been some frame to watch!

Laurence Sissarello beat Albert Goldwin, the Astoria’s other Star man, 51 - 48. Another very close call, with a little bit of luck around.

Yewhung Chin won against Kim Olivero, no score available and Sean Galligan had a walkover.
Five points, on home ground, for barentertainment.net.

Athletics: Jonathon Wyatt from New Zealand wins Gibraltar's Mountain Race

Gibraltar - The race previews accurately predicted the results of the final WMRA Grand Prix race on the Rock of Gibraltar which took place yesterday, Saturday 29 October.

Jonathan Wyatt (pictured left) of New Zealand and Anna Pichrtova of the Czech Republic recorded their fifth Grand Prix victories in convincing style.

    MEN
Wyatt won by 38 seconds from last year's Rock of Gibraltar winner, Vicente Capitan (ESP) in 43:03 for the 11.5km course.

With Wyatt and Italy's Marco Gaiardo (not competing) unassailable in first and second positions in the overall Grand Prix ranking before the start of the final race, Andrzej Dlugos (POL) and Martin Cox (GBR) fought it out for third position. Although beaten by Dlugos by six seconds, Cox in fouth position acquired enough points to give him third position in the overall GP. Makus Kroell (AUT) could only manage tenth position in yesterday's race and so slipped to 5th position overall, just five points behind Dlugos.

The top nine prize winning positions in the men's final Grand Prix ranking were from nine different countries – NZL; ITA; POL; AUT; SLO; CZE; AUS; and FRA.

    WOMEN
With Pichrtova already declared overall women's GP winner before the race began, the young Slovenian, Mateja Kosovelj, who is just nineteen, ran as well as could be expected and in finishing second, 40 seconds behind Pichrtova, elevated herself to second position in the overall women's GP ranking. Iva Milsova (CZE) was third in both the Rock race and in the season's ranking.

Although the number of competitors in this final GP race were fewer than in the other European races, the quality was of the highest order with nearly all Grand Prix prize contenders present.

The promised magnificent views of Europe and Africa, and of the Mediterranian and the Atlantic, from the top of the Rock were unfortunately missing as thick mist swirled around the summit. However, the Barbary apes caused plenty of amusement as they tried to pinch anything resembling food.

Both Wyatt and Pichrtova will now prepare themselves for the lucrative Obudu Ranch Mountain Race in Nigeria on 25 November, when it will be seen if the top mountain runners can hold their own against the fast flat road running athletes who have been attracted to the race.

Cricket: Gibraltar's season comes to a close against Arden Taverners from Warwickshire

Arden Taverners, the latest in a long line of visiting sides from the United Kingdom this season, played two matches over the week-end against local selections, going down on both occasions but certainly not without putting up a good fight. However, They returned to the Rock on Tuesday for a third encounter, which they won.

    Taverners stage a good recovery.
The local selection won the toss on Saturday, put the visitors in, and tasted early success as Shaun Ainsworth claimed two wickets in two balls in only his second, and the innings, fourth over. Alan Hunt then joined Paul Dawes and these two took the score along to 43 when Steve Martin had the latter caught by Mark Garratt. Martin struck again, bowling Roger Wickson with the total on 65, but that was to be the GCA XIs last success of the afternoon as Hunt and Matthew Lunn defied all efforts to dislodge them, putting on 117 runs for the fifth wicket to bring the final total to 182/4 off the allotted forty overs. For the locals, Ainsworth returned figures of 2/22 and Martin 2/27.

    Solid batting from locals.
Ian Farrell and Kieron Ferrary gave the local selection a fine start with an opening stand of 66 in fourteen overs without managing to run each other out! Both then went in quick succession, Farrell bowled by Martin Woodward for 35 and Ferrary bowled by Phil Dawes for 32. This brought Steven Gonzalez and Iain Latin to the crease and a partnership of 94 runs ensued. Gonzalez had just passed his half century when he was caught off the bowling of Hunt but by then victory was in sight and it was just a question of whether Latin could also reach his half century. With the scores level he was run out two short of that target, but the GCA XI still won with seven balls to spare.

    The Bacarese and Rocca show.
The local selection opted to bat first on the Sunday and after the loss of an early wicket, Mark Bacarese and Christian Rocca proceeded to put the visitors attack to the sword. Rocca was fortunate to be dropped when on 37, and the Taverners were made to paid dearly for this mistake as he and Bacarese piled on 192 runs for the second wicket in the process of which Rocca reached yet another century in typically aggressive mode whilst his partner was content to lend him steady support. When Rocca finally fell, caught by Ken Lunn off the bowling of Chris Wickson for 118, Bacarese took over the mantle of scorer in chief, also achieving three figures. The GCA XI finished on 293/6 at the end of the allotted overs. For Arden Taverners, Chris Wickson took 2/63.

Facing such a daunting total, Arden Taverners got off to a bright start, Oliver Sidwell and Simon Wickson going at six an over before the former fell to a fine catch by Iain Latin on the mid wicket boundary. Alan Hunt then joined Wickson and the run rate continued at a healthy almost six an over before Rocca held on to a hard chance at mid-on to dispose of Wickson and give young Robbie Skinner a wicket. Hunt and Jonathan Hartley continued to punish anything loose and at the half-way twenty overs stage the Taverners total stood at 119/2 with victory still a remote possibility. The whole tenor of the game changed after the mid-session drinks break as Rocca held on to another hard chance off the bowling of Bacarese to account for Hartley (40) and Kieron Ferrary pulled off a smart piece of stumping to dispose of Phil Thomas off the bowling of Latin. Bacarese and Rocca then combined once again to get rid off the dangerous Hunt (54) and Latin claimed two further victims. Taverners skipper Chris Smith put up some brave resistance towards the end with an undefeated 41 but by then the game was well beyond his side who ended on 223/7. Latin returned the fine figures of 3/26 and Bacarese took 2/44.

ARDEN TAVERNERS END TOUR ON A WINNING NOTE.
With dull skies and persistent rain in the latter stages of the game, Arden Taverners rounded off their three match tour on the Rock with a comprehensive victory against a weakened GCA Selection on Tuesday to finally bring the 2006 cricket season to an end.

    Taverners’ batsmen score heavily.
The Taverners won the toss, chose to bat first, and after the loss of an early wicket Matthew Lunn and Phil Dawes set about a moderate local attack, putting on 80 runs for the second wicket before the latter was caught behind by stand-in wicket-keeper, Andrew Chipolina, for 44. This brought Jonathan Hartley to the crease and a ferocious assault ensued against some loose bowling and even poorer fielding, 94 runs coming in just thirteen overs, before Rudi Phillips trapped Lunn leg before for 70. A heavy shower interrupted proceedings for a while but on resumption Hartley raced on to his half century, eventually reaching 66 before falling to one of three catches by George Shacaluga. Contributions of 24 by John Brookes and 26 not out by Chris Smith enabled the Taverners to reach a total of 253/5 in their allotted forty overs. For the local selection Steve Martin returned figures of 2/43.

    Local Selection offer poor resistance.
The local selection struggled from the outset, losing wickets at regular intervals, the one bright spot in their innings being fourteen-year-old Scott Chipolina, who opened the innings and carried his bat for 41. The whole side was dismissed for 120 in 36.1 overs. James Smith took 2/20 for the Taverners.

Commonwealth Games: Charles Flower approves of Glasgow's bid to host the 2014 games

Commonwealth Games delegates ended a three-day fact-finding mission to Glasgow with praise for the city. Glasgow is one of three cities bidding for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Officials from across the U.K., Malta and Gibraltar toured venues all over the city and met with members of the 2014 bid team.

Lino Farrugia Sacco, chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation in Malta said, “we are more than happy that everything is in place for the bid. The people involved have experience in running world-class events, which is very important. The venues are all top quality and the plans for the athletes village are very impressive”.

Charles Flower, a delegate from Gibraltar, said Friday his ideas had changed about Glasgow in the last 48 hours. He said,
“I had a perception that Glasgow was not very safe, but I have found a thriving modern city with fantastic facilities. The visit has been very positive and the city has a strong case”.
English delegate Ian Emmerson called Glasgow a vibrant, thriving modern city and referred to the regeneration projects that are already going on. He added, “I first visited here in the 1960s and the city has undergone huge changes” and said, “Glasgow’s is by far the best bid”.

But in the midst of the praise there are concerns over the shooting competition.

The Glasgow Herald reports that although pistol events are an essential part of both the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games, Britain’s strict gun laws prohibit the use of such firearms in public venues, but Glasgow’s bid team hopes a solution can be found by staging the event on a secure Ministry of Defence or police firing range.

Under the law no public money is to be spent and no legacy will be left for the sport.

Rob Shorthouse, media spokesman for Glasgow’s 2014 bid said, “while no formal decision has been taken on venues and the sports program, we understand the importance of shooting to many countries in the Commonwealth and are investigating venues”

Ju Jitsu: Gibraltarians win two gold medals in UNIJA Championships

The Gibraltar Bushido Ju Jitsu Academy has returned from the United Nations Course and Championships in South African Sun City proudly adorned with two Gold Medals won in individual competitions, Empty Hand (Katas) and Weapons (Kata), beating competitors from countries such as the United States and Great Britain.

Sensei Dylan Bocarisa defended a Gold medal in the Weapons Kata, won last year in Ireland (Letterkenny), making it Gold two years in a row.

Sensei Tony, senior Chief Instructor of the Academy, won Gold in the Empty Hand Kata, another win in a tough Masters Competition.

“We have made the Bushido Ju Jitsu Academy of Great Britain proud of our achievements by winning two Gold Medals against very strong and experienced Ju Jitsukas from seven different countries".

“We have made history for Gibraltar as very high standards are required at this world level of competition; we have been training very hard for the last 12 months and it only took 90 seconds of competition time. So the commitment and amount of dedication in training hours are very demanding, but if you want to have the results we have had you must be prepared to fully commit yourself to very hard and dedicated hours in training to at least perform well."

“We have met with old friends and have now met new ones at this prestigious championship and course.”

Sensei Tony was one of the visiting Masters from abroad with a very impressive knowledge of and background in Ju Jitsu. Sensei Tony went through six matted areas from a total of twelve and taught his skills at a very high standard to which all participants acknowledged at the end of the course; he also received congratulations from the rest of the Masters for a job well done.

Sensei Tony was also an official Ref and Judge in the competitions which took place during Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September 2006.

The team were in the Sun City resort in South Africa but reported that as there was so much work to do there was unfortunately very little time for leisure for the Gibraltar team.

During the trip, official meetings were held at which decisions were taken by the UNJJA senior Founder members to which Sensei Tony is now very well recognised for the hard work being done by Gibraltar delegates in promoting Gibraltar and the art of Ju Jitsu worldwide.

“I would like to express my most sincere gratitude for the wonderful treatment by our friends and hosts Sensei Sam Tomkin 7th Dan Ju Jitsu senior representative for the South African Jikishin Ju Jitsu Association, and not forgetting Mrs Fiona Tomkin” said Sensei Tony.

“We are now looking forward to the 2007 Congress, which will be held in Greece, and we will be taking a team of about 20 including children and adults as international competitors to represent Gibraltar at the United Nations Ju Jitsu Annual Congress. It will be the first time we will be taking a full team from Gibraltar to the UNJJA course and championships.

“We now have a lot of work to concentrate on in the preparation for this world championship, in order to do well and place Gibraltar further on the world map of Ju Jitsu.”

Rugby: Gibraltar succumb to Rugby Club Portuense in friendly

Gibraltar Rugby Club's first game of the season, against a very strong side from Puerto Santa Maria, played valiently against a club that has a team in the Spanish second division. The C.R.A.P. who are a much better side than what their acronym suggests, is one of the oldest clubs in Andalucia and has, in the past, provided some of Spain's national players.

Rugby Club Portuense praised the Gibraltarian sides determination and strength. The final score was 26 - 7 to the Spanish Side.

Football: GFA and Man UTD to play SV Vollmond from Switzerland

Gibraltar's Football Association (GFA) will be playing SV Vollmond, from Switzerland, on the 4th of November at the Victoria Stadium. The visitors will then play Manchester United on the 6th of Novemeber.

SV Vollmond are famous for playing against some rather odd opposition, most recently having played against the volcanic island of Montserrat. The Vatican City recently played a match against SV Vollmond, on a small field just outside of the Vatican; the Vatican City prevailed 5-1.

The Vatican City National Football team is the football team that plays for the Vatican City. They are one of only eight fully-recognised sovereign states whose national team is not a FIFA member. Others are Monaco, Montenegro, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Micronesia, Nauru, Marshall Islands and Palau.

Vatican City have played only two games against international teams, both ending in 0-0 draws. The first game was against San Marino in 1994, and the second game was against Monaco on November 23, 2002 in Italy.

The Vatican City squad consists of the Swiss Guards (voluntary military force drawn from male Swiss citizens), members of the Papal council and museum guards (Italian citizens). Since only members of the Swiss Guard can get the citizenship of the Vatican and they cannot be amassed in large numbers for a long time, the national team can play only a few rare international matches often drawing a fair amount of interested press.

Tenpin Bowling: Gibraltar row hits tenpin bowler

    Giles Tremlett in Madrid
    Saturday October 21, 2006
    The Guardian

Europe's tenpin bowling alleys have become the unlikely focus of the latest round in the row between Spain and Britain over the sovereignty of Gibraltar.

The Spanish government has banned a bowling alley in Barcelona from hosting next year's European championships because a team from Gibraltar was due to compete.
"The Spanish government has instructed its sports federations not to participate in championships where players from Gibraltar also participate"
said Kim Thorsgaard Jensen, vice-president of the European Tenpin Bowling Federation.
"As a consequence of this, it is not possible for Spain to host the European champions cup 2007."
The championship has been moved to Luxembourg. Spain's tenpin bowling association declined to comment officially yesterday, but one member said: "This was not our decision."

Spain is battling to stop Gibraltar from joining the ranks of European football nations. The Court of Arbitration for Sport, based in Switzerland, recently ruled that Uefa should admit Gibraltar, at least provisionally. Amid rumours that teams such as Real Madrid and Barcelona might be pulled out of the Champions League, Uefa is putting off a decision until December.

Rugby: Gibraltar prepare for new season

The new rugby season is nearly upon us and the Campo Gibraltar Rugby Club are looking to improve on last years 4th position finish. Competing in the Andalucia Division 1 is very tough and after a very disappointing start to the season the Gib team pushed on and produced an impressive second half to their season. The league winners were Jaen Rugby who won by 6 points and had a far superior points difference. Malaga came second and they were 7 points ahead of Gib.

The league in Spain is split into regions and the Gib team play in the Andalucia Division 1 under the banner of the FAR (Federacion Andaluza de Rugby). Even though they came fourth they were in a competitive 12 team league

With the season beginning at the end of this month the team has been building up its match fitness by playing friendlies against some stiff opposition – University of Malaga and Puerto Santa Maria.

A spokesman for the team had this to say about the new season, “We are increasing our training to twice a week so we should hopefully do better, we have the individual abilities so there is no reason why not.”

Football: Lions under 9s aiming high in 2006-2007 league

In an ongoing series of team profiles from the Junior Football League VOX was able to meet up with another team with high expectations this season.

Lions Toyota Under 9 are one of two Lions teams in the Under 9 league but are about to begin their second season in this age group.

Although last season saw them playing against older players and results did not go very well for them there is a hope that their fortunes could be better, starting on saturday.

Coaches Tyrone Smith and Michael Cervan are both confident in their teams ability but insisted that there was no "stand out" player, simply a very good team.

With the season starting this saturday there will be many teams in the Under 9 league that will find Lions Toyota a very hard team to beat.

    Cricket: GCC win Murto Cup

GCC KEEP TO THREE YEAR CYCLE.
The Gibraltar Cricket Club, the longest established cricket club on the Rock, struggled for years after the War to lift the Murto Cup, Gibraltar’s oldest trophy dating back to the 1920’s, finally achieving this in 1997. They won it again in 2000 and 2003, so one could say that it was almost inevitable that they should do so again in 2006 – and they did! In Saturday’s game they had a relatively comfortable passage against Grammarians/UKCCC winning by five wickets with 13.3 overs to spare.

    Grammarians/UKCCC indebted to Steve Martin.
Grammarians/UKCCC batted first and got off to the worst of possible starts, losing the wicket of their skipper, Chris Watkins, in the very first over of the innings caught by wicket-keeper Kieron Ferrary off the bowling of Steven Gonzalez. Ross Harkins and Shaun Ainsworth then set about staging a recovery, putting on 42 runs in the next eight overs before the former became Gonzalez’s second victim of the afternoon, caught for 22. Vikram Khatwani went cheaply, missing a widish full toss from Rudi Phillips to give the ever alert Ferrary behind the stumps a chance he rarely misses. This brought Steve Martin, more renowned for his bowling than his batting, to the crease and he and Ainsworth featured in a third wicket partnership of 50, when the latter, who had already moved into the thirties, fell to a fine reflex catch by Christian Rocca at mid on off the bowling of Gary De’Ath. Charlie Harrison kept Martin company whilst a further 51 runs accrued, but when he gave De’Ath a hard return catch, there was little resistance forthcoming from the tail, and it was left to Martin to score an undefeated 70 thereby enabling his side to reach the fairly respectable total of 188/8 at the end of the allotted overs. Gonzalez returned figures of 3/32 and De’Ath 2/31.

    GCC recover from poor start.
Ian Farrell and Andrew Chipolina gave GCC a cracking start hitting 25 runs in the opening three overs when the latter tried a hit too many and was caught. Ferrary then played across a very full length ball from Ainsworth and had his stumps shattered, and when Farrell miscued a rank long hop from Harrison to give short mid wicket a simple chance, the GCC innings was wobbling on 55/3. This brought Gonzalez and Rocca together and they gradually wrested the initiative, their fourth wicket stand yielding seventy runs. When Gonzalez was adjudged leg before to Watkins for 59, David Knipe kept one end up whilst Rocca made merry and victory came ever closer. Knipe fell with 21 runs still required for victory but that was to be Grammarians/UKCCC’s last success, Rocca ending undefeated on 66 in a final total of 190/5.

    Next Week.
The cricket season seems to go on and on and next week-end sees the visit of the last UK touring side of the year in Arden Taverners, who hail from the Birmingham area and who will be on their third tour to this neck of the woods, having previously visited in 1998 and 2002. They are scheduled to play three matches on the Rock on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, all matches starting at twelve noon and of forty overs duration.

    2006 Individual Awards.
The GCA Committee had now made the Individual Awards for 2006. The top batsman award goes to Steven Gonzalez of GCC and the top bowling award to Kabir Mirpuri of Calpe CC. The young batsman of the year goes to Kieron Ferrary of GCC and the young bowler award to Robbie Skinner of Calpe CC. The most improved young player of the year (the Eddie Ellul Memorial Trophy) has been awarded to Kabir Mirpuri.

Tenpin Bowling: ETBF confirmed they will not be implementing sanctions against Spain

The European Ten Pin Bowling Federation (ETBF) confirmed yesterday, they will not be implementing any sanctions against the Spanish Bowling Federation (Federación Española de Bolos).

The confirmation is in answer to questions put to the ETBF, following their statement earlier this week, saying that the Spanish Government had instructed its sports federations not to participate in Championships where players from Gibraltar also participated, and as a consequence, the ETBF were forced to change, at short notice, the European Champions Cup 2007 venue to Luxembourg. Spain had been the intended hosts until they made their objections to Gibraltar's participation known.

In reply to questions on whether any sanctions would be applied against the Spanish Federation by the ETBF, their President, Addie Ophelders, said today:

“The answer to your question is loud and clear: No, ETBF is not going to sanction FEB (the Spanish Bowling Federation).”

When asked if Spain would be participating in Luxembourg, in the light of the continued participation in the European Champions Cup 2007 by a team from the Gibraltar Tenpin Bowling Association, Mr Ophelders said he did not know whether Spain is participating in the ECC 2007 in Luxembourg, and added:

“From our side (ETBF side) there is no objection (to Spain) to participate.

ALL our member federations (and we have 48 at the moment in Europe) are and should be allowed to participate.”

Mr Ophelders added his own view to the Spanish Government’s policy towards Gibraltar and our participation in international sporting events, saying:

“I can only hope that the Spanish government is changing its policy with regard to Gibraltar soon because that would be good for our sport in general and for the sportsmen and sportswomen in Spain in particular.”

All very good sentiment, though he might have spared a thought for Gibraltarian sportsmen and sportswomen too.

In any case, once again, Spain is allowed to continue to discriminate against Gibraltar sporting bodies and participants, despite the inconvenience caused to many international events and sporting associations and federations, such as the ETBF, who continue to allow Spain to carry on its bullying, scurrilous and unsportmanlike tactics against Gibraltar, allowing Spain to get away with it, totally without sanction or even a sign of disapprobation.

Handball: Is being re-launched once again in Gibraltar

In a statement announcing the re-launch today, GHBA President David Martinez said their first main objective is to field a squad for the forthcoming Strait Games to be held in Gibraltar next year.

The GHBA has only just received sponsorship from Barclays Bank Gibraltar for the purchase of some equipment. They would like to thanks Barclays for their support.

The GHBA said they are very keen to recruit new members, especially children up to the age of 12, who would be interested in learning and playing handball. Handball proved to be very popular during the 70’s and the Association hopes to once again revive local interest in this fast moving, dynamic and exciting sport.

The GHBA has big plans for the future and has been busy gaining support from some professional clubs, which are lending their support to the development of handball, in Gibraltar.

Anyone interested or who would like more information should contact Gibraltar Handball Association President David Martinez on 54001650/58009340 or 44452 or email: Gibraltar Handball Association

Hockey: Royal Gibraltar Regiment win tournament, in Northern Ireland

The Royal Gibraltar Regiment’s hockey team recently returned from a tour of Northern Ireland where they won a tournament to commemorate the disbandent of the Royal Irish Regiment (Home Service). The RG’s team remained unbeaten against strong squads from two Battalions of the Royal Irish, the Royal Regiment of Scotland (now the UK’s largest Infantry Regiment) and the Royal Engineers.

The Gibraltar team was greeted by a typically wet Northern Irish morning as the draw took place, which resulted in the Regiment been first up against 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish. It took the Regiment a few minutes to acclimatise itself both to the weather and to the tough opposition. An early penalty converted by Lance Corporal Donald Drimmie put the Regiment in the lead, with victory sealed from a short corner strike by Second Lieutenant Charles Bonfante.

Next up Regiment next was the Black Watch. It was anticipated that this would be the hardest match as some of the Black Watch players had played for the Army. The first half was quick and intense, without score. A strong halftime address by team manager Captain Gareth Flower, no newcomer to hockey, bounced the team back to dominate the second half. An excellent performance by midfielder Lance Corporal Andrew Perez forced the team into the lead with two open play goals from, Corporals Donald Drimmie and Phil Jessop.

In the next match the Regiment played a selection from all Battalions of the Royal Irish. Our team fell behind on the scoreboard for the first time after an early goal, but the equaliser came soon from a strong open play performance by Lance Corporal Jobim Torres. Still a draw at the halftime whistle the Regiment was once again quick to react. A foul by the 25 yard line proved costly as Lieutenant Bonfante’s screaming pass found Corporal Jessop’s stick sending the ball up into the net in undoubtedly the goal of the tournament. With little time left and a narrow margin the Regiment continued to press for a final goal which came in the form of an open play belter by Bonfante ending the game 3-1.

The final game was against the Royal Engineers. By this time legs were becoming heavy and so was the rain! The opposition did not prove as tough as the previous two matches though both teams were visibly strained. Another early open goal from Private Ivan Massetti helped the Regiment sit back and control the game. He then went on to score a second allowing the team to comfortably begin the second half and dominate the rest of the match, ending 3-0 after a late goal from Cpl Jessop.

The Regiment convincingly won the tournament unbeaten, seeing off the best opposition the British Army could muster. The title of Player of the Tournament was awarded to young Bonfante. The tournament has kept the name of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment at the top of Army Hockey for years to come, building on its past success as Champions if the Infantry.

South African Kayaker in Gibraltar on epic 16,000 km trip for African HIV/Aids prevention

South African Kayaker in Gibraltar on epic 16,000 km trip for African HIV/Aids prevention

Werner Stoltz - Kayaking 16000 kms to prevent Aids in AfricaWerner Stoltz is a remarkable young man who has taken the pledge to do something about HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Werner is attempting one of the most adventurous and dangerous expeditions, to raise awareness and money for HIV/AIDS. He is making a solo kayak trip from London to Durban - a total of 16 000km!

Not only is he the first person to attempt such a daring feat, but this will also be the longest kayak journey in history.

Werner successfully circumnavigated the Irish coastline in 55 days with a sea kayak. He completed the 1,740km circumnavigation completely solo, raising money for children infected with HIV.

Werner Stoltz is a 24 year old South African with a passion for helping those less fortunate than himself. After circumnavigating Ireland, he began his next most epic journey at 12:00 on Thursday 8 June 2006.

Werner Stoltz navigates the Thames as he leaves London at the start of his epic 16,000 km kayak journey

He is kayaking from London to Durban, a journey of almost 17,000 km which will take him more than a year and a half to complete, to raise funds and awareness for the Aids pandemic sweeping through Africa. Werner’s trip has so far taken him from the Thames River in London through the English Channel to France.

Werner arrived in Gibraltar earlier this month. He is hoping to depart Gibraltar, once his visa is cleared, on the 22 October 2006 when he will be crossing the Straits to Morocco to start the African leg of his journey.

Whilst in Gibraltar, Werner posted this updated via email:
“Just a short email to update all the folk out there about what I have been up to, where I am and what lies ahead for the next few months.

Well, I have finished Europe and I am now in Gibraltar where I am waiting for my Moroccan visa to open.

On the 22nd of October I will be making the 30 km crossing from Gibraltar to Ceuta, providing the wind plays along.

The next 12,000 kms will not be easy as I am sure you are all well aware, so please remember me in your prayers.

We are still trying to sort out a Satellite phone for Africa ,but until then communication will be limited and I am not sure how often the website will be updated, but please keep logging on as I will try my best to keep everyone updated.”
From Morocco he will continue along the coast of North Africa to Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, then head South along the East African coastline, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and finally to Durban where he hopes to arrive in January 2008.

This extraordinary expedition aims to raise money for Werner’s dream, to open an Aids shelter called the “Ninevah Project” in South Africa on his return.

To help him achieve his goal, the trip has been sponsored by various parties, including Garmin, Men’s Health, Clover Cargo International, Spar, Adidas, USN and many others.
