Rugby: Gibraltar prepare for new season
The new rugby season is nearly upon us and the Campo Gibraltar Rugby Club are looking to improve on last years 4th position finish. Competing in the Andalucia Division 1 is very tough and after a very disappointing start to the season the Gib team pushed on and produced an impressive second half to their season. The league winners were Jaen Rugby who won by 6 points and had a far superior points difference. Malaga came second and they were 7 points ahead of Gib.
The league in Spain is split into regions and the Gib team play in the Andalucia Division 1 under the banner of the FAR (Federacion Andaluza de Rugby). Even though they came fourth they were in a competitive 12 team league
With the season beginning at the end of this month the team has been building up its match fitness by playing friendlies against some stiff opposition – University of Malaga and Puerto Santa Maria.
A spokesman for the team had this to say about the new season, “We are increasing our training to twice a week so we should hopefully do better, we have the individual abilities so there is no reason why not.”
