Cricket: Records tumble at the Victoria Stadium

The Senior League match between Calpe CC and PGCC on Saturday at the Victoria Stadium saw records tumble as Calpe went on a run rampage. David Young’s 205 established a new record for the highest individual score since modern records began in 1982, overhauling Christian Rocca’s 199 scored in 2001, whilst his opening partnership with fourteen year old Scott Chipolina of 285 was not only the highest for the first wicket but for all wickets. All told, 614 runs were scored on a day when bat dominated ball. Another feature of the game was the average age of the Calpe side which included several thirteen and fourteen year olds.

Young irrepressible.

Calpe CC won the toss, opted to bat first and Young was soon putting the PGCC attack to the sword. He raced to his fifty in just the thirteenth over, whilst at the other end, young Chipolina was happy to provide the necessary support. It was much the same story after the 17th. over drinks break as Young sped to his century, scored off only 85 balls, whilst Chipolina moved steadily into the thirties. When the second drinks break came at 34 overs, Young had moved on to 170 and Chipolina was only nine runs away from his maiden half century. Young duly reached his double century (scored off 143 balls) and Chipolina crawled his way through the nervous forties to eventually achieve his goal. There was to be no respite for the PGCC attack once Young had retired and Chipolina had been bowled by Gautam Prabhu for 53 as Chris Phillips struck 34 runs off 31 balls and Kabir Mirpuri scored 22 not out off fifteen balls. Calpe’s final total after the allotted fifty overs stood at 359/4.

PGCC fight back

Undaunted by the task facing them, PGCC, who it must be said are a far better batting side than they are a bowling one, fought back gamely despite losing their first two wickets with only 31 runs on the board. Krishna Raghav and Manish Grover then put on 78 runs for the third wicket before the latter was caught by that man Young off the bowling of thirteen year-old Rahul Daswani for 29. Daswani struck again four overs later, bowling the dangerous Prabhu before PGCCC skipper, Shah Hetal, kept Raghav company whilst a further forty runs accrued for the fifth wicket. Raghav’s long vigil at the crease eventually cam to an end as Mirpuri disturbed his stumps when the batsman was on 81, and although Shah went on to make 36, his side fell well short of the mammoth total facing them, being all out for 255 in 44.4 overs. For Calpe CC., Robbie Skinner returned figures of 3/63, Karan Sadhwani took 2/59 and Daswani 2/21. Calpe CC took 21 points from the game to PGCC’s seven. It had turned out to be a long day as proceedings got under way at 11.40am. and did not end until 6.51pm.

Grammarians romp home against UKCCC.

Meanwhile at Europa, Grammarians and UKCCC were contesting their Wiggins Shield match postponed earlier in the season. Grammarians batted first and posted a total of 260/2 off their allotted thirty overs, Ian Farrell scoring 92, Ross Harkins 78 and Richard Buzaglo 78 not out. UKCCC were never in the hunt chasing this total and were eventually dismissed for 160, only Steve Cary with 49 making a worthwhile contribution. For Grammarians, there were two wickets apiece for Harkins, Raj Kochhar and Nicky Gordon. Grammarians went home with 20 points to UKCCC’s two.

Next Week.

There are three Senior League matches scheduled for next week-end. On Saturday, Calpe CC take on GCC at the Victoria Stadium whilst Grammarians and UKCCC meet for the second week running at Europa. The Sunday fixture features PGCC and Combined Colleges at Europa. All matches are scheduled to start at 11.000pm.

    Squash: The Gibraltar Open 2006

The Gibraltar Squash Open 2006, sponsored by BECK’S and OEM, proved to be a huge success yet another year. There were 41 entries to the Mens Main Event (from which four plates were played). The Veterans had 12 entries, the Women’s tournament had 8 and the Vintage 5. The Junior tournaments proved the that there is a future for the sport in Gibraltar with 12 entries in the Under 16 tournament and 11 in the Under 13s.

Saturday 24th June 2006 saw a very busy Squash Club with squash finals being played throughout the afternoon into the evening. The morning was kicked off at around eleven o’clock with the Semi-Finals of the Men’s tournament. First up was Domagoj Spoljar (Croatia’s top seed) who was defending his trophy against Humberto Mesquita, a Brazilian based in London (new comer to the Rock) who proved he could play very good silky squash when he beat Gibraltar’s top seed Anthony Brindle in the Quarter Finals. Domagoj got of to a flying start by winning the first game. Although Humberto pulled one game back Domagoj proved too strong in the end and booked his place in the Final with a 3-1 win.

Next up were Ben Ford (second seed) from the UK, and Marcus Hall, Andalucia’s top seed for the past decade and past winner of the Gibraltar Squash Open. Ben’s high paced squash helped him gain a lead in the first game and although Marcus kept retrieving the impossible (as usual) Ben never took his foot of the pedal and also booked his place in the final with a 3-0 win. At this point the final was a mouth watering prospect for all squash lovers at the club……and there must have been around one hundred spectators at the time!!!

During the afternoon the rest of the finals were played as well as the whole Junior Tournaments which were mainly run by one of the London’s better know squash coaches and frequent visitor to Gibraltar, Jaz Karim. In the Under 13 competition, Sean Robba got the better of Samantha Pearce and won the event with Julian Wahnon winning the Plate against Lesley Anne Sene in their final. The Under 16 tournament was dominated by Jovan Santos (who is becoming a regular winner of this event) against Sean Gomez, another (younger) rising star!! The Under 16s Plate was won by the best Junior Lady, Karina Tewkesbury, who beat Sean Robba (Under 13 champ)!!

Next up in terms of Finals was the Ladies Plate, where Yvette Orciel (Juniors’ coach) beat Miriam Carballo in the final. This was followed by the Ladies final in which local squad member Gail Attias beat UK’s Lucy Baker 3-0 in a final that was well attended.

The Vintage tournament was played on a Round Robin basis by the five players who entered the tournament with the eventual top two player playing the final. This was won by the evergreen Francis Chipolina who beat Julio Peire in the final.

The Veterans was a hard fought affair throughout all stages of the tournament with very good standard squash being played by all. The eventual winner was Danny Fabre who beat Martin Lawrence in an epic five setter which was won by Danny 9-7 in the last game. A true classic between these two players who always offer a great spectacle whenever they play each other!

As previously mentioned, the Men’s event had four Plate Tournaments which were won by:

D PLATE: Kenneth Saez beat Louis Poggio in the final 3-0.

C PLATE: Juan Carlos Bautista beat Charles Bottaro 3-2.

B PLATE: Mark Tewkesbury beat Fidelio Bonfante 3-0.

A PLATE: Joel Samuels beat Mick Ford 3-1.

That only left the Men’s final which was disputed by the top two seeds, Domagoj Spoljar from Croatia and Ben Ford from the UK. Ben got off to a flying start, playing very attacking squash and making Domagoj have to work very hard for any points. He hit nick after nick with some scintillating squash and managed to win the first set 9-1. The second set saw a determined Domagoj build a 3-0 point advantage to which Ben came back strongly and fought into the game. There were some gruelling rallies in this game which Ben again clinched 9-6 leaving Domagoj very tired for the third. Ben proved to be too strong in the third for Domagoj, thus winning the affair 3-0 in games in what proved to be a fantastic squash match for all present!!

This tournament has put an end to the 2005/06 squash season which has proved to be a very successful one with the squash standard in Gibraltar increasing yet another year. This is largely due to the success of the Gibraltar Squash Open which allows locals to compete and see a very high standard of squash provided by players from abroad who are attracted by the hospitality and the sun!! A special thanks to Anglo Hispano (Beck’s agents) and OEM for supporting this tournament and allowing the Gibraltar Squash Association host a successful event for the development of local squash!!

World Cup: Spain lose to France

France struck twice in the last 10 minutes to see off Spain and set up a quarter-final meeting with Brazil.

Spain went ahead through David Villa's superbly struck penalty after Lilian Thuram rashly fouled Ibanez Pablo.

France soon equalised when Frank Ribery rounded Iker Casillas after he was found by Patrick Vieira's clever pass.

With seven minutes to go Vieira powered in a header and with Spain pushing forward Zinedine Zidane broke clear for a solo effort in stoppage time.

Zidane, who struggled in France's first two group games, looks to have finally found his rhythm, prompting and cajoling his teammates to victory just as he did during their successful 1998 campaign.

France's victory also means Brazil will face their nemesis Zidane again, the player who scored twice against them in the 1998 World Cup final.

An absorbing game offering two contrasting styles, with Spain pursuing a patient passing game while France adopted a more direct approach to try to utilise Thierry Henry's pace.

Mariano Pernia went close with a dipping free-kick, though the Spain defender was soon on defensive watch as he courageously blocked a Zidane shot.

While Pernia showed bravery, his defensive colleague Carles Puyol relied on athleticism to head back to Casillas to stop Zidane's pass reaching Henry.

The Arsenal striker finally escaped the attentions of the Spain defence when he broke down the right and sent over an inviting cross that neither Vieira or Ribery could reach.

Villa's penalty briefly stopped France in their tracks.

Thuram was too eager to challenge Ibanez and Italian referee Roberto Rosetti had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Barthez guessed correctly, but Villa's shot - low and powerful - was unstoppable.

Five minutes before the interval France equalised with a elegant goal as Vieira's quick pass released Ribery.

Finishing has not been the Marseille's winger strongest point in France's group games, but Ribery's speed got him round Iker Casillas and his sidefooted finish eluded Pernia and Puyol as they tried to cover back.

France's equaliser saw the game shift up a notch in intensity in the second half.

Just as Vieira had released Ribery, Zidane did the same for Florent Malouda, whose lobbed effort drew a one-handed save from Casillas.

Just past the hour Ribery skipped his way past Pernia, but he was unable to find a French player with his powerful cross.

France's invigorating start to the second half prompted Spain coach Luis Aragones to make a double substitution as he brought on Luis Garcia and Sanchez Joaquin.

With 12 minutes left Joaquin ghosted past Eri Abidal before firing a shot into the side netting.

But it was France who found an extra gear in the last 10 minutes as first Vieira and then Zidane punished Spain.

It was a deflected Zidane free-kick that Vieira headed in and France's captain applied the coup de grace with a run and powerful shot that gave Casillas no chance.

The defeat was the first Spain had suffered under Aragones in 25 games since he took charge after Euro 2004.

    Cricket: Holmesfield avenge earlier defeat

Holmesfield CC left the Rock with some of their pride restored as they won their second game against local selections at Europa on Thursday. The game was a forty overs one but was played under unusual conditions, one side batting twenty overs before conceding the crease to the opposition, then continuing their innings after which the opposition completed their forty overs. Highlights of the game were a fine match-winning century from Rick Turner and a whirlwind half century from Oliver Rossington for the visitors, and good innings for the GCA XI from Kieron Ferrary (74) and David Young (50).

The locals batted first and were given an excellent start by Ferrary and Richard Buzaglo who put on 91 runs for the opening wicket, before the latter was caught by Christian Rocca (guesting for the visitors) off the bowling of James Bruce for 36 in the fifteenth over. Ross Harkins fell in the 20th. over, at the end of which the GCA total had reached 120/2.

Holmesfield CC then occupied the crease and they, too, were given a good start by Turner and Neil Pearson who put on 60 before the entry of Bob Brooks into the attack accounted for the latter, caught by Buzaglo behind the stumps. That was to be GCA’s last success for some time and at the twenty overs stage the total had moved to 105/1, so that at the half-way stage the game was evenly poised.

It was then the turn of the GCAXI to resume their innings and they lost three wickets cheaply, including that of Ferrary before Gareth Balban (30) and David Young (50) swung the pendulum their side’s way with a bright sixth wicket partnership of 72. Both then went in rapid succession and the tail had little to offer as the final total progressed to 237/8. For Holmesfield, Rossington took 3/44, Peter Westwood 2/28 and James Bruce 2/49.

The men from Sheffield then resumed their innings requiring 133 runs in their remaining twenty overs, a rate of 6.65 runs an over. Turner and Rossington got them well on the way as their second wicket stand blossomed, eventually yielding 92 runs. The 25th. over proved a dramatic one as Kabir Mirpuri first had Rossington caught for 51 and with his very next ball accounted for Rocca, caught at slip by Rudi Phillips (much to the mirth of the local players!). Jim Pearson then joined Turner and runs began to flow, the former striking 36 runs off just 24 balls and by the time he departed the game was as well as won, Turner remaining undefeated on 117 as GCA’s total was passed with 3.2 overs to spare. It had been a good contest, fought in the right spirit, and the visitors left happy to have avenged the heavy defeat they had suffered two days previously.

Cricket: Visitors from Sheffield lose their first match.

Holmesfield CC from Sheffield played their first of two matches on the Rock on Tuesday at the Europa Oval and found the local GCA selection too hot to handle. An undefeated century from Christian Rocca and an aggressive 72 from David Young, backed up by an unbeaten 67 from Chris Phillips posted a total which in the end proved too high a mountain for the visitors to climb though they certainly did not give up without a fight.

    GCA run rampage.

GCA won the toss, opted to bat first and Rocca and Young proceeded to take their toll of some moderate bowing, the hundred coming up in only the twelfth over. The total had raced to 133 when Young skied one to long off where Jim Pearson took a good catch; Young’s 72 had been scored of just 42 balls and included six fours and four sixes. GCA lost the wicket of Kieron Ferrary soon afterwards and at the twenty overs stage the total had progressed to 180/2. Rocca retired on reaching his hundred and Ross Harkins departed for 21 but by the then the total had passed the two hundred mark, and there was to be no respite for the tiring Holmesfield bowlers as Phillips and Kabir Mirpuri (35 not out) added a further 103 runs before the allotted forty overs were up.

Holmesfield lost two early wickets after which Neil Pearson and Oliver Rossington fought back with a third wicket stand of 82 before the former mistimed a ball from Mirpuri to give Harkins a simple chance at cover; the batsman had contributed 31 runs. Rossington went on to reach 74 before he, too, was dismissed, and there was little resistance to follow as the side was dismissed for 160 to give the locals victory by 153 runs. For the GCA XI Gareth Balban returned figures of 3/8. Mirpuri took 2/28 and Kayne Peliza 2/7.

Holmesfield return to the Rock on Thursday and will no doubt be hoping for better fortunes!

Surfing: Gibraltar's surfers lay the foundations for a successful Surfing and Bodyboarding Association (GSBA)

A new surfing association has been started in Gibraltar, to help serve the community and promote the sport of surfing on the Rock.

Organisers say the Gibraltar Surfing and Bodyboarding Association (GSBA) will seek to create interest in wave-riding sports and give free lessons to kids who are attempting it for the first time.

A meeting was held at the Bayside Sports Centre lecture room to elect a committee and approve the constitution, already prepared by founder members.

The meeting was well attended by the majority of the original surfers of Gibraltar and some interesting points were raised, not least the need to train up coaches through national governing bodies, to enable them to undertake surf coaching in a way which is both safe and controlled.

Unfortunately, as elected chairman Andy Warr pointed out, this would mean raising funds so that professionals could be brought to Gibraltar to give lessons on how to become proper surfing instructors.

But this raised another issue – in order to become a surfing coach accredited by the British Surfing Association the person must have a Royal Surf Lifesaving Award which unfortunately is not issued in Gibraltar. So it was decided to try to co-ordinate with tourism heads to bring in a person from the UK to give this course and award the qualification to all the surfers and lifeguards interested.

However, both these qualifications – the RLSA and the BSA Level 1 Coaching certificate – could probably be given by the same person as the GSBA has made contact with the BSA based in Newquay, Cornwall and they have agreed to send over a professional for a week to train the Gibraltar crew.

In the meantime it was decided to try to get the opinion of the people of Gibraltar through a survey and pressure the Government to allocate a certain area of the beach throughout the summer season.

Weekend surf trips are also on the cards for the near future when young and old can have a chance to get firsthand experience of the sport. It will consist of an overnight stay, camping in a prime surfing spot in one of the main surfing beaches of the Costa de la Luz, with surfing instruction and camping included in the price.

In the future there are also possibilities of getting affiliated with a European or international organisation which could lead to competition and further recognition for Gibraltar’s athletes.

One of the founders of the association, Andy Warr, a social services child carer, says, “Surfing has become a big part of my life and given me opportunities to travel and see the world. It keeps me healthy, makes me aware of the need to take care of the environment and helps me relax from the working week. I would recommend this sport to anyone regardless of age or sex.”

For any further queries or information on forthcoming meetings please contact Andy on 5401 1363.

    Golf: Medgolf's Gala Casino Trophy

Young Josh Hunter forgot it was Father’s Day, when he beat his dad John in to second place at the latest Med Golf competition held at Montecastillio on Sunday 18th June. Josh, 13, not only won the Gibraltar Gala Casino trophy, but also his invitation to Valderrama for the Med Golf Masters in November and the day’s “top team” prize with his playing partner Tom Rooney. Playing off the men’s tees and a handicap of 26, this was a superb effort by Josh and he becomes the youngest ever winner of any Med Golf tournament. Bill Aldridge finished third and to keep this a family combination on Father’s day, also won the longest drive and a nearest the pin prize alongside his son Dan.

There was some consolation for dad John, when in addition to his second place, he had the best score of the day with a fine round of 77, the best score on the par 3’s and won a couple of nearest the pin prizes as well. Another of Gibraltar’s international golfers, Roy Azzopardi, won the senior’s competition and a nearest the pin prize. The “star quality” award went to Les Housely.

There are two Med Golf competitions in July and Santana Golf Club is the next venue for the Smarties Bar (Woodhall Spa) Trophy on Sunday 2nd July, followed by the Blue Sky (Sotogrande) Trophy on Sunday 30th July at Estepona. The usual crystal trophies and prizes will be on offer at these two tournaments, along with invitations to Valderrama and the Med Golf Masters for the winners. Pool: Julian McGrail wins Gibraltar Pool Open

The quarter-finals provided some entertaining action with two matches going to a deciding black on the last frame. Jimmy Bruzon twice led Francis Becerra 1-0 and 2-1 only to lose it in a last gasp finish and on the deciding frame. It was a hard fought match where Francis Becerra never gave up and in the end managed to overcome a determined opponent. The other match in the top half proved a one sided affair with an inspired Neil Wilson beating Gary Chant 3-0.

Francis Becerra played Neil Wilson for a place in this year's final. In the bottom half of the draw all eyes were on the Julian McGrail's vs Jonathan Collado's match. Julian edged 1-0 in front before Jonathan tied the match 1-1, the following frames were very close but Julian's experience paid off and he went on to win 3-1. In the other quarter-final, surprise package, Henry Gerada was up against Ty Olivero. Henry was clear favourite when he was leading 2-0. Ty Olivero clawed his way back in contention and levelled the match 2-2, in the end he managed to hold his nerve to win it on the deciding black, in what was another close and hard fought match. This meant that Ty Olivero would play 2003 Champion Julian McGrail for a place in the final.

    Quarter-Final results:

Francis Becerra 3 Jimmy Bruzon 2
Neil Wilson 3 Gary Chant 0
Ty Olivero 3 Henry Gerada 2

Squash: finals of the League Cup

The finals of the League, Cup which this year was sponsored by Famous Grouse whisky, through local agents, Anglo Hispano Company, were played recently at the Squash Centre, South Pavilion Road. The finals determined the winners, runners-up and third and fourth place. The winning team was Aon Attack made up of Martin Lawrence at No.1, Mark Tweskebury, No. 2 and Gino De Haro at No.3 The runners-up were Isis composed of Anthony Brindle (No 1), Carl Gomez (No.2) and Stefan Montegriffo (No.3). The matches were played on the basis of the best of five games, one point being obtained for each game won and the winner of the match being awarded two additional points making it a total of five.

The two teams disputing the third and fourth positions were Baker Tilley, No 1 Steven Shacaluga, No. 2 Charles Bottaro and No 3 Ian Collinson and opposing them was Toyota made up of Nicky De Haro (No1), Denis Clinton (No,2) and Jonathan Zammitt (No.3). First on Court 4 were Zammitt and Collison, the former winning 3-0, thereby obtained 5 points for his team. Next to play were the No.1s De Haro and Shacaluga. De Haro won the first two games quite comfortably and many expected him to win the third. However, Shaca came back with a vengeance taking the next two games before Nicky just managed to win the fifth game thereby obtained 5 more points for Toyota, making it s total of 10 points. Although it would have made no difference, the No2s played their game, Denis Clinton beating Charles Bottaro 3-0.

First on Court No3 to decide the winners and runners-up were the No3s, Stefan Montegriffo for Isis and Gino De Haro for Aon Attack. Gino did not have too much difficulty in beating Stefan 3-0 and therefore obtaining the 5 points for his team. It was next the turn of Aon Attack’s No 1, Martin Lawrence, to face Isis’s No.1 string and Gibraltar’s top player, 17 year old, Anthony Brindle. Not unexpectedly, Anthony had no great difficulty in disposing of Martin 3-0. This meant that Aon Attack and Isis had obtained 5 points each. It was therefore left to the No.2s Mark Tewkesbury for Aon Attack and Carl Gomez for Isis, to decide who would emerge the winners of the League Cup. Although it was by no means a walkover, Mark managed to beat Carl 3-0 obtaining 5 points for Aon Attack who therefore became the winners of the Famous Grouse League Cup. After Anthony Brindle, Mark and Carl lead the next generation of Gibraltar’s young squash players.

The trophies were presented by Charles Isola of Anglo Hispano Company on behalf of Famous Grouse. The opportuny was also taken to for Charles to present the trophies to the winners and runners up of the League, which, for the first time was sponsored by Stella Artois beer instead of Silk Cut, through their local agents, Anglo Hispano company. As GSA president, Ronnie Barabich explained, following the policy of not promoting tobacco, which he felt the GSA as a sports club, should support (Anglo Hispano Company, also agreeing with this policy) had kindly agreed to replace Silk Cut with Stella Artois. The League was also won by Aon Attack composed of Martin Lawrence, Mark Tewkesbury and Gino De Haro with Kenneth Asquez ans Stuard Lambie as reserves. The runners-up were also Isis, i.e., Anthony Brindle, Carl Gomez and Stefan Montegriffo.

The presentation of prizes was followed by a BBQ.

The next event in the calendar was the Gibraltar Closed sponsored by Gibtele.com, the finals of which were played on Friday, 2nd June. A report on this event will be published shortly.
The Gibraltar Open, which is being jointly sponsored by Anglo Hispano Company (Becks Beer) and OEM, will be held between the 12th and 24th June. A number of players from outside Gibraltar are expected to take part. The prize money has been increased this year.

Sailing: The Fifth Gibraltar Morocco Yacht Rally

One of Gibraltar’s most popular marinebased events, the Gibraltar Morocco Yacht Rally took place over the weekend of 2 to 5 June 2006. This was the fifth Rally and each year sees an increasing number of participants this year was no exception with recordbreaking 41 entrants.

For the first time, the Rally was sponsored by Ocean Village and each entrant received crew clothing and a unique Rally pennant courtesy of the developer. “But its not just about the crossing to Morocco,” enthused rally organiser Derek Pennington. “Our Rally has the reputation of being the world’s most sociable yachting event.” The Rally got off to a great start with the HMS Sabre of the Gibraltar Squadron signaling the commencement of the Rally off the North Mole at Friday lunchtime. It was a spectacular sight as all boats were required to have a sail up at the start.

Ocean Village’s involvement could not have come at a better time, following the recent announcement of their plans to purchase Marina Bay and continue their investment in the marina and surrounding facilities. It is their vision to improve the marina area and facilities to compete with other Spanish Mediterranean yacht marinas, which are often overcrowded.

On the eve of the start on Thursday 2 June, Greg Butcher, Chairman of Ocean Village, addressed the Skipper’s Briefing at The Ship in Marina Bay. “When I was asked to support the Rally, I had little hesitation. It is events such as these yacht rallies, regattas, even powerboat racing and other marina based activities that I would like to promote and plan to stage in and around Ocean Village in the future. Indeed, Gibraltar deserves events such as these and they give us the opportunity to show the wider community our wonderful marina and the facilities we are developing here.”

He continued “I believe we can and should compete with other Spanish Mediterranean yacht marinas and be able to promote Gibraltar as one of yachting’s prime destinations.”

There was one alteration to the weekend’s activities…the popular dinghy races and water games in Marina Sir had to be cancelled due to the marina having a visitation of hundreds of jellyfish ! However, this did not damp enthusiasm for other activities such as the Moroccan Feast on arrival in Morocco on Friday evening and a huge BBQ on Saturday evening on the quayside of Marina Smir, during which there was the prizegiving ceremony. Two specially engraved trophies made by Gibraltar Crystal were presented to the first sailing yacht to arrive in Morocco, Allan McCashin’s Bombay Sapphire, and the first motorboat, Stephen Olivares’ Liskana. While these two trophies were proudly received, there were also prizes for the best cocktail, youngest and oldest skippers, first dolphin sighting and even best female crew !

A fantastic mix of serious yachting, fun and socialising, the GibraltarMorocco Yacht Rally has gone from strength to strength and there are already enquiries being made for the next one with every anticipation of an even bigger event.

    Darts: Gibraltar National Darts Championship

The Gibraltar National Championship was played last week. Attendance was quite good in light of the world cup having started.

In an amazing draw, the top 4 players in Gibraltar got drawn together in the 1st round of the competition.

This time round it was the old guns that went through (George Federico beat Justin Broton 3-0 and Francis Taylor beat Dylan Duo in a close 3-2 match.

The highlight of the night was young Danny Peach who managed to take out Francis Taylor (always the toughest of opponents as Dylan found out). Danny was overjoyed by his win but lost against another veteran of darts, Angel Debono. George then beat Manolo Asquez to reach the final.

In the final George played as he did all night with good clinical finishing but Angel Debono gave him a run for his money.

George Federico is now the 8th time winner (and record holder) of this long standing trophy and will get 1st choice in deciding whether he will attend the Winmau World Masters being held in, Bridlington, England in November this year.

Rugby Sevens: Gibraltarian team Alchemists reach the semis of the Benidorm 7s, plate competition.

Gibraltar's rugby players made their annual pilgrimage to the Benidorm Rugby Sevens tournament. The event is a prestigious, international event, which attracts many of the elite rugby sevens clubs and (on occasion) nations of the world.

Sevens is the quicker, smaller numbers and time game of rugby, which requires extreme fitness and great rugby skills.

The tournament is held over three days, on the one rugby field, which means that the relatively short games are played in quick succession. The Benidorm Sevens competition is divided into two categories: The first and toughest is the International section, which this year has seen the national sides of Japan, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, New Caledonia, take part as well as the American team Atlantis, which usually features some of its international players and other teams with a mixture of international players and future hopefuls.

The second tier is the club section, which attracts clubs with a pedigree in rugby sevens. Gibraltar choose to play in this competition as to play in the international section would be a little on the overambitious side. The players that went to the competition named themselves The Alchemists and faced some tough opposition against clubs from the U.K. as well as France and Spain.

The Alchemists did not win any of their group stage matches, which meant that they immediately qualified for the Plate tournament, which is basically a mini tournament for the losers of the main club competition.

    Club Competition: Group H

    Alquemists
    (Gibraltar)

    5 - 12

    St. Josephs (Wales)

    St. Josephs
    (Wales)

    0 - 17

    Junior Caledonia
    (New caledonia)

    Alquemists
    (Gibraltar)

    7 - 32

    Junior Caledonia
    (New caledonia)

Gibraltar's Alchemists did very well in the Plate competition to beat Akra by a convincing 27-14 margin:
    Plate competition

    Gala YM
    (Scotland)

    35 - 5

    Old Leysians
    (England)

    Akra
    (Spain)

    14 - 27

    Alquemists
    (Gibraltar)

    Maesteg Celtic
    (Wales)

    0 - 27

    Windsor
    (England)

This meant that Gibraltar made it through to the semi-finals and met the Scottish team Gala YM, who became the overall winners of the plate competition.
    Semis:

    Gala YM
    (Scotland)

    35 - 5

    Alquemists
    (Gibraltar)

    Windsor

    (England)

    26 - 5

    HMS Edinburgh
    (Scotland)

The winners of the club section were Bobbyseven from France and the winners of the international tournament were Susies Exiles a team comprised of Pacific islanders, who managed to beat the Japanese national side by 33-12.

Cricket: Fabian Vinet attends seminar in Lords on promoting cricket in cricket developing countries.

The seminar held towards the end of May, attempted to answer a rather complex question:

How do you raise public awareness of cricket in a country like Finland?

Part of the answer is clearly through the annual ECC Presidents’ Day at Lord’s. Last year one of the guests at Lord’s was Finland’s Deputy Sports Minister, former Olympic javelin thrower Tapio Korjus who had never seen the game played before. Given his own sporting background he was particularly intrigued by the technique of bowling, and he was impressed enough by the experience of the day to lend his weight to the Finnish Cricket Association’s efforts to establish the sport there. He now runs the Kuortane Sport Institute, where the FCA has their training base.

As a result, cricket is now recognised as a full member of the national sporting body, and the FCA has received a government grant of €25,000 and an offer of help with the formidable task of translating a coaching manual into Finnish. Not a bad pay-off from a day spent watching cricket at Lord’s!

This year’s event took in the third day of the First Test against Sri Lanka, and the guests included the Chef de Bureau des Federations Sportives of the French Ministry of Sport, M. Serge Agreke, and his wife, the Ministers of Sport of Gibraltar and Jersey, the Hon. Fabian Vinet and Senator Mike Vibert, and representatives of fifteen member countries of the ECC together with commercial partners, sponsors, and other key figures in the world of European cricket.

Welcoming the guests, ICC European Development Manager Richard Holdsworth emphasised the dependence of the ECC on the work of volunteers across Europe and on the support of cricket’s many sponsors.

‘It’s fantastic that we have so many good things going on,’ he said, noting that the number of players in the ECC’s 27 member nations had risen from 19,000 to 54,000 over the past five years.

This year’s guest list included for the first time the organisers of the ECC’s numerous tournaments, as well as tournament referees, umpires, and coaches.

For some of those present, as with Mr Korjus last year, this was a first opportunity to see top-level cricket, and you could hear quiet explanations of such intricacies as the front-foot no-ball law, following on, and how it has come about that Monty Panesar has, in the space of a few months, become both a figure of ridicule and a national icon. That, perhaps, is something only cricket could produce – although England’s former goalkeeper David Seaman achieved it towards the end of his career.

The Presidents’ Day was supported by MCC, who made both tickets and hospitality available for the sixty participants.

As a showpiece for cricket it is unparalleled, and as Sri Lanka began their epic second-innings resistance, with as yet only a hint of the slowly-unfolding drama of the Test’s final two days, there was much to enjoy for both seasoned cricket enthusiasts and those who were coming to terms with the experience for the first time.

‘How can you seriously enjoy a game that takes five days and then ends without a result?’ is a question cricketers are often faced with from sceptics. It is to be hoped that having spent an (admittedly chilly) Saturday at Lord’s will have helped to provide the ECC’s guests with a convincing answer.

Gibraltar has become the first UK Overseas Territory to officially implement 100% Me

Gibraltar has become the first UK Overseas Territory to officially implement 100% Me – UK Sport’s anti-doping education and information programme. The Hon Fabian Vinet, Gibraltar’s Minister for Sport, launched the programme on Friday at an event attended by UK Sport representatives and Shelly Rudman, Winter Olympic silver medallist and 100% Me Ambassador.

UK Sport has been working closely with the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority’s Sport Development Unit in the run-up to the launch, providing advice and guidance on establishing a National Anti-Doping Policy and ensuring that their athletes and governing bodies are compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code and the UNESCO Convention. A number of Gibraltar officials have already been trained up as accredited tutors, and two athlete Ambassadors - swimmer Rachel Fortunato and footballer Matthew Reoch – have also been appointed. 100% Me will now roll-out across all sports in the country.

"We see an important part of our role as helping partner organisations in other countries who perhaps don’t have the necessary infrastructure or resources to get an appropriate education programme in place," said Allison Holloway, Education and Information Manager at UK Sport. "All that is needed is enthusiasm and commitment to the global fight against doping in sport, and Gibraltar has that in abundance.

"The aim now is to work with all UK home countries and crown dependencies to help ensure as all British athletes are getting the information and support they need to make informed decisions about competing drug-free."

Fabian Vinet added: "We take the issue of doping in sport very seriously and want to ensure our athletes fully understand their responsibilities about competing drug-free. 100% Me sends out a strong message to current and future stars about the values and behaviours required to reach the top which will help further build our reputation as a fair sporting nation. I would like to thank UK Sport for their help in launching 100% Me in Gibraltar and I look forward to continuing to work with them in the future."

100% Me was launched in the UK in May 2005, since when around 18,000 athletes have received face-to-face advice with trained experts.

Gibraltar Disability Movement host a group of young men from the UK

The Gibraltar Local Disability Movement (GLDM) would like to thank many who have helped us out, in lending a hand with a group of under 16 year old kids who paid us a visit from the U.K.

    The boy's leader Mr.
Adrian Peacock from the U.K. requested help from the G.L.D.M. to see if we could make arrangements to host some kids from his group for a few days.

There was a particular situation associated with their visit, that being that this group of kids were deaf. Those that helped out with the kids certainly learned a lot from the experience.
With the situation with our visiting kids being deaf, we the G.L.D.M. assumed that communication with our local boys was going to be tough, but we were proved wrong. Our visiting youngsters enjoyed the usual rock excursion, but what made the trip a great success for the boys were the sports events organised. The visiting youngsters enjoyed taking part in competing with our kids at; basketball, football, summing, as well as through the use of the youth service.

One of the visiting boys "Luke" is hopeful that he well be playing football in England’s first division.

We would like to end this letter by saying that many of us who have helped, found that having the young men, here with us, was a fulfilling experience and it's thanks to the U.K. lads that we now know (BSL) British sign language. This has been a truly pleasurable experience, which we hope to enjoy with them next year.

The G.L.D.M. would like to thank the following:

Mr. David Parody, head coach of GABA’s under 16s and under 13s basketball team, and a big thanks to the youngsters of the under 16s and under 13s basketball teams.

Mr Raymond Gonzalez, head coach of Saint Joseph’s football club and their under 15s as well as the assistant coach of the under 11s. Thanks to the youngsters of the under 15s. We must also add that Saint Joseph’s football team triumph first in the international football championship held in Spain Barcelona, winning the Vlanes cup.

GASA Swimming Pool for the enjoyable help in providing activities for our
    visiting youngsters.

    Gibraltar
youth service allowing us to use the center

The G.L.D.M. would like to apologise if they have forgotten anyone that helped us.

The Gibraltar Local Disability Movement will be officially launching their website on 27th of June.

Straight Games: Gibraltar take over as hosts of the next Straight Games

Gibraltar takes over the responsibility of hosting the next Straight's Games. The games in Ceuta were a huge success, with more than 1,400 children taking part. Gibraltar will certainly not experience the lack of fascilities, which Ceuta is currently experiencing and which has been made public in the newspapers of the Campo.

Hockey: Gibraltar to host the U21 European Nations trophy.

Gibraltar will be, once again, hosting a major European Hockey tournament. On this occasion Gibraltar will be hosting the European, mens', under 21, Trophy tournament.

The Trophy tournament is Europe's second, major, under 21 competition, after the European Championship, which sees Europe's elite nations such as Holland, Germany and England doing battle. Gibraltar have earned their right to compete at this level due to their historic perfomance in the 2004 Challenge competition, which meant that they won themselves the opportunity to compete at Europe's 2nd tier competition. Gibraltar will be hosting some very good teams, such as Scotland, Switzerland, Italy, France and the Welsh, who are, apparently, aiming for a strong performance that will gain them promotion to the Championship in 2008. (Read here)

The tournament will certainly be a challenging one for our upcoming players. Gibraltar however, does have a strong team that will certainly be able to compete at this level. The added bonus of playing on home ground will certainly spur on Gibraltar's players.

The fact Gibraltar has, yet again, been chosen to host such a major event, reflects the confidence and support, the European Hockey Federation has in Gibraltarian hockey. The new fascilities at the Victoria Stadium, are certainly amongst the most modern around. We are certain that the stands will be full of Gibraltarian support, with plenty of Gibraltarian flags and supporters willing the Gibraltarians to victory.

Scotland, one of the strong favourites to win the competition have recently played a match against Portugal: They clinched an emphatic 7-1 victory over Portugal's juniors, in preparation for the European Under-21 Championships in Gibraltar in July 23-29. The Scots, who had previously drawn 3-3 with the Portuguese seniors, needed to defeat the hosts' younger side by six clear goals to win the triangular torunament, and doubles from Menzieshill's Gavin Byers and Willie Marshall of Kelburne helped them reach their target with seven minutes left of the under 21s game.

The groups for the competition are as follows:
    Pool A Pool B
    Scotland France
    Wales Switzerland
    Italy Austria
    Portugal Gibraltar

Gibraltar's first game will be against the French, on July 23 at 18:00. Make sure you write this date down in your diary and lend your support.

Darts: GDA cup provides some exciting contests

The GDA Cup was played this week and with full attendance from the 4 qualified teams it proved to be yet again a fun filled entertaining evening.

    Laguna Social Club, Cannon Bar,
Gib Utd (R&J Refrigeration), NewCastle Boix (Youth team)

The draw was completed and the semi-finals where drawn as follows: Laguna Social Club vs Cannon Bar
Gib Utd (R&J Refrigeration) vs NewCastle Boix (Youth team)

The 1st semi-finals between the Laguna and Cannon Bar were taken all the way to the last game. Laguna however, at one point were 3-1 up and only needed 1 more game from the remaining 3 games. Despite this advantage the Cannon Bar were not ready to give up the fight and pulled level to 3 games a piece.

The closely contested, decider between Pepe MascareƱas (Cannon Bar) and Fidelio Bonfante (Laguna) fought right down to the wire, Fidelio however, came up on top, winning by 2-1 to make way for Laguna to play in the final.

In the other semi-final it was the Youth team (Newcastle Boix) against the experienced league runners-up Gib Utd (R&J Refrigeration).

The Young kids though nervous tried their hardest against their strong opponents but it wasn’t to be their day.

Having lost 4-0 and thus conceding the match they still fought on to finish with a respectable result, losing most of the remaining matches by 2-1.

Amongst the other good performences, by the younger players, were Jeremy Cruz and Stefan Federico from Newcastle Boix, both did exceptionally well and both will attend the Youth European Cup in Germany, this coming July. Jeremy took his opponent to the final leg and scored very well, including lots of tons and several 140’s. Stefan was able to beat his opponent 2-0 giving the young lads a win amongst their highly fought but unfortunate losses.

The finals were contested between 2nd Division Laguna Social Club and Premier division Gib Utd. Gib Utd proved to be too strong for them taking the final 6-1.

Well done to the worthy winners.

Football: Gibraltar beat St Pauli to take 3rd place in the Wild Cup

Gibraltar beat St Pauli to come third in the FIFI Wild Cup yesturday. After just losing to the Northern Cyprus team in the Semi-Finals they played against St Pauli, who they had previously drawn against, in the group stages of the competition. They had earlier on in the week lost the semi-final against Northern Cyprus, who were the overall winners of the competition and had demonstrated throughout the competition their excellent footballing skills..

The game played against St Pauli was a good opportunity to inflict a defeat on the German side, who had managed to hold them to a draw, in their first encounter, despite Gibraltar having had most of the possession and chances. To beat St Pauli by 2-1 was therefore a great achievement for the Gibraltarians.

The only team to beat them in the tournement did eventualy win it. Northern Cyprus beat Zanzibar, 4-1 in the Final.

Gibraltar can come home now with their heads held high as they claimed a respectable 3rd place finish.

    Well done Gibraltar!!!
