Squash: Gibtelecom Gibraltar Closed Championship
The finals of the Gibraltar Closed, sponsored by Gibtelecom, were help on Friday, 2nd June, at the Squash Centre, South Pavilion Road. In all four finals were played.
Seventeen year old Anthony Brindle emerged, for the second year running, as the Rock’s top player after convincingly beating Steve Shacaluga by three straight games, 9-3, 9-7
9-1 in a 45 minute match, which proves that despite the final score, it was no walk-over for Anthony. Steven has reached a number of finals first against Malcom Head and now against Anthony, but has still to win the title.
The results of the other finals were as follows:
“A” Competition: Mark Tewskesbury beat Charles Bottaro 3-0 (9-0, 9-2, 9-3);
“B” Competition: Colin Davis beat Juan Carlos Bautista 3-1 (7-9, 9-1, 9-3, 10-9)
“C” Competition: Stefan Montegriffo beat, the only lady taking part in the tournament, Gail Attias, 3-2 (2-9, 9-5, 4-9, 9-3, 9-2)
Thirteen boys, most of whom have been introduced to squash recently and have been attending coaching sessions, took part in the juniors event. The final was won Jovan Santos who beat Sean Gomez.
The prizes were presented by Adrian Ochello on behalf of Gibtelecom.
The next event is the Gibraltar Open which will be played between the 12th and 24th June.
