Martial Arts: Gibraltar taekwondo squad returns from Sheffield

Back on 26th October 2006, a selected team from the British Taekwondo Control Board Gibraltar flew over to Sheffield to take part in the Ultimate Taekwondo Championships, which were held on Sunday 29th October 2006.

Our four players Alex Trinidad, Jansen Reyes, Brandon Tosso and Keith Chichon did extremely well in the competition. They took part in the following Kyrougi (sparring) categories:

Alex Trinidad - Junior - 72 Kgs
Jansen Reyes - Senior - 72 Kgs
Brandon Tosso - Senior - 78 Kgs
Keith Chichon - Senior - 84 Kgs

There were a total of approximately 400 competitors. 250 players competed for the Kyrougi (sparring) competition whilst the remaining 150 competed for the Poomsae (pattern) competition. There were teams from different regions throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Even the National Northern Ireland Team took part in the event. There were also teams from Italy, Portugal, Poland and even from as far as Afghanistan.

Both A. Trinidad and K. Chichon ended their participation at the championships, losing their relevant matches at the semi-finals. Unfortunately, J. Reyes only made it to the quarter-finals.

B. Tosso made a good turn out at the quarter-finals when he scored 4-2 against one of the Northern-Ireland players who had only 2 weeks ago, won a Bronze medal at the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union Championships held in Australia. His participation ended when played at the semi-finals.

The ending result was well deserved as three of our players (A. Trinidad, B. Tosso & K. Chichon) obtained a Bronze Medal each.

On behalf of BTCB Gibraltar, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our 4 players and our 2 coaches Ernest & Edward Garcia, who accompanied them to Sheffield, for their dedication and persistence shown these past couple of months. Also, I would like to thank Master Kathy Barwell (organiser of the Championships) and her club members from Doncaster who had the time to train with our team, a few days before the event took place.
