Squash: The 4th round of the Andalucian tournament will be held in Gibraltar
As some readers may know Gibraltarian squash players have been playing in the Andalucian league, with notable success. Squash is not the first sport in Gibraltar to seek competition from across the border. Many other sports, including, fencing, rugby, basketball and many others are seeing the potential of having week in week out games against more challenging opposition. Although the inconvenience of having to travel some distance to play matches may put some people of, many keen sport enthusiasts make this sacrifice, with the aim of improving their ability.
Gail Navas a member of Gibraltar's squash committee kindly commented to SportGibraltar that:
"This is the 4th year that we have been playing in the Andalucian league. One of the tournaments is always held in Gibraltar, this year it will be held between the 22-23 April for women and men.
"As you can see from the Mens rankings (Clasificcaiones Masculino) there are a number of Gibraltarians participating. In fourth place its Anthony Brindle (he is just 17 and is currently Gib's No 1 player). We also have Steven Shacaluga (18th place) , Mark Tewksbury (21st place), Mark is only 15 years of age and he is currently doing extremely well in squash, he also won last years Junior Andalucian Tournament. Christian Navas (30th place), Nicholas De Haro and Carl Gomez (36th place) Carl is another 15 year old who also plays extremely well. Justin Chipolina (45th place). This year our ladies haven't played yet, usually we tend to beat the Spanish ladies but because we don't attend all tournaments due to commitments, its slightly difficult to finish in 1st place.
