Hockey: Two teams from Gibraltar on trips abroad.
In this week's first division Collegians faced Grammarians Hockey Club 1951 (GHC 1951). The game was a hotly contested affair, where players from both sides almost came to blows. Goal scored by Collegians: J. McAuliffe, A.Perales. GHC 1951: 2 F. Cotino, D Olivera. A total of 3 green cards were given and 3 yellow, a large amount, which reflected the unnecessary aggression in this hotly contested encounter.
We hope the atmospehere will be better when Grammarians go to Dublin to play in a mini tournament organised by Corinthians Hockey Club of Ireland. The Dublin Easter Hockey Festival 2006 will be held between Sat 15th April to Mon 17th April. There will be some top class opposition for Grammarians primarily from the UK but there will also be teams from Germany and Austria. We wish them luck in the festival.
Meanwhile Johnny Villa's, Eagles ladies, will be heading to Italy to play in the European Cup Winners Cup Trophy and will play against strong teams such as Ceske Budejovice from the Czech Republic, H.C. Olten from Switzerland and Kommultshik Barnaul from Russia, who were last year demoted from the A Division. They depart tomorrow and return on thursday of next week. This is the third European cup a Gibraltarian team takes part in and last years results, 0-0 against a French club, 2-1 loss against a Welsh team and a 3-0 loss against an Austrian team, are good signs that the standard of ladies hockey is up amongst the best in Europe. We wish the ladies the best of luck in their games.
Eagles men's team will also be on Cup Winners duty when they travel to Vienna, Austria. Their tournament also starts on Friday against Instonians of Ireland, who will probably be their toughest challenge, in the group stage. The other teams in their group are H.C. Roma and Bohemians Praha from the Czech Republic. Watching the Eagles train on Tuesday one could see their focus on ensuring they are at their best for the forthcoming tournment. We wish all our local teams the best in their respective tournaments.
