Netball: Round up of recent events and tonight's fixtures

Inter Schools Tournament

The winners of the tournament were the St Anne's Middle School (SAMS) Red team, who beat St Joseph's in the final by 10-7.

The event was held in the tercentenary stadium cheered on by a rowdy if enthusiastic crowd. The splendid fascilities of the new hall must be a truly envigorating experience for our young athletes, who must certainly must have been delighted to play there.

All in all there were ten teams, four from St Anne's, two from Bishop Fitzgerald one from St Jospeh's, from St Christopher's Sacred heart and last but not least another from the Loretto Convent. The Loretto team has in recent competitions achieved some excellent reults despite the smaller pool of players available for selection., due to the smaller size of the school's population. In this event they achieved a credible 4th place after succumbing in one of the semi finals to a strong St Joseph's side. In inspiring mode, for St Jospehs was Meaghan Martinez, whilst for the Loretto side Noelle Laguea and Maddie Cruise played extremely well.

Both side ended the alloted time on 10 a piece which made for a nail biting, five minutes of extra time. Despite the extra five minutes the two teams were unable to break the deadlock, which resulted in a golden goal shoot out, which the inspirational Nicola catania converted to provide St Joseph's with a spectacular win.

The final was also to be a hotly contested affair, with both teams providing some exciting if not tense, end to end action. the first half resulting in 5 a piece. St Anne's came out the stronger team in the second half and managed to pull away from St Jospeh's to end the final with a 10-7 win to St Anne's reds. Well done to the Reds and to all the teams on a great day out.
