It was a good start to the festive season for local businessman George Desoiza when he won the Valmar Pharmacy Trophy at Alcaidesa on Sunday 10th December and not only did he collect the sponsor’s crystal trophy but also the first golden invitation for the Med Golf Masters at Valderrama in November 2007.
Sponsors Valmar Pharmacy welcomed over 50 players to Alcaidesa and on a difficult, blustery day, George used his local knowledge of the course to secure top spot, closely followed by Juan Rodriguez in second place and the sponsor himself, Francis Caruana, coming in third. There was some consolation for Juan, when along with his playing partner Greg Rogers, he won the team prize. Top senior was Roy Azzopardi and in the ladies section, Julie Brewer continued her recent good form to win here. Martyn Brown also returned to winning ways by taking the “star quality” award.
Amongst the other prizewinners, nearest the pin prizes went to Nicky Allen, Danny Tovie, Dylan Johnson, Josh Jones, Roy Azzopardi, John McHale, with George Desoiza having the lowest combined total on the par 3’s. He also had the best score of the day along with Dan Aldridge, with a round of 78. Dan had the longest drive and that secured him another prize.
Med Golf members still have several opportunities to win their invitation for Valderrama, starting at Estepona on Sunday 14th January 2007, where Ibex Insurance are the tournament sponsors. The Famous Grouse Trophy at Almenara follows this on Saturday 27th January. Tee times can be booked by ringing Johnathan Goodson on Spain (0034) 639 741 886 or e-mail him at jg@medgolf.gi Apart from the monthly tournaments, the “player of the year” competition is in progress and the winner here will also receive a Valderrama invitation, along with their year’s free membership kindly donated and sponsored by Estepona Golf Club.
