Football: Giraltar Vikings beat Crusaders
The Maranatha Baptist Academy football team allowed one big play and it proved to be their downfall in an 8-0 loss to visiting Gibraltar in a nonconference game Friday.
The Crusaders and Vikings played a scoreless first three quarters before Gibraltar broke through on a key letdown by MBA.
After a sack put Gibraltar in fourth-and-25 from the Crusader 45, Gibraltar's top receiver got free in the Maranatha secondary. Viking senior receiver Clark Lindquist ran a simple post pattern and sophomore quarterback Sam Ausloos found him open. Lindquist hauled in the pass for a 45-yard touchdown with under 8 minutes to play.
“It was a learning experience,” Maranatha football coach Rich Akins said. “We gave him (Lindquist) too much space and he beat us.
“We had too many mistakes. Too many turnovers, too many penalties. We are starting a lot of young kids and we know we will get better with experience. Like I said this is a good learning experience.”
The Crusaders return to action at home Friday against Brookfield Academy in a 4:30 p.m. game.
