Football: Liverpool Legends to play Rock 11

For the First Time Ever on the Rock, Liverpool FC Veterans are coming to Gibraltar - An event not to be missed!

The two teams for the Rock XI vs Liverpool Legends match in aid of Research into Childhood Cancer have been announced, adding fuel to the fire of anticipation around Gibraltar. The match is scheduled for Tuesday 3rd October 2006, kick off at 6.45pm.

The aim of the Rock XI vs Liverpool Legends Football Match is to raise awareness and as much money as possible for Research Into Childhood Cancer. The idea originated during a casual conversation between the would-be organisers where the concept of holding an original and above all profitable event in aid of charity was discussed.

Once the idea of challenging the Liverpool Legends to a football match was mentioned there was only one project that was ever going to be pursued. Thankfully, we have been lucky enough to find great support from the Liverpool Former Players Association, the Government of Gibraltar, the relevant Sporting Authorities, and our sponsors and event organisers Santos Productions in order to bring this project to fruition.
We now count on the support of the community to make the event a resounding success.
We hope that the event will exceed everybody's expectations and we manage to raise a substantial amount of money for this worthy cause.
Research Into Childhood Cancer (RICC) is a Gibraltar based charity (No.49) whose aim is to contribute towards finding a cure for cancer in children. In particular, RICC funds a research project specifically targeting Neuroblastoma. The research team works out of Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and, over the years, they have made groundbreaking progress in developing a vaccine to cure those suffering from this disease. This obviously has worldwide implications as all the large research bodies work closely together. RICC has proudly played a role in this, but there is still more work to be done.

RICC was started up in 1989 by Margaret and Anthony Sacarello shortly after their son, Philip, died of Neuroblastoma when only 9 years of age. It has since developed into a very popular local charity for a number of reasons. Needless to say, most people can relate to the nature of this disease and its impact on the child and the family unit as a whole. Additionally, RICC has always striven to look for innovative and fun ways of raising money, attempting to give back something in return and always welcomes ideas from the general public.

Football: UEFA to consider Gibraltar's application next week

The Executive Committee of UEFA will discuss Gibraltar’s membership application when it meets next week in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The Gibraltar Football Association’s bid to join UEFA is one of two applications to be reviewed at the meeting, according to a UEFA statement yesterday. The committee meets next Wednesday and Thursday.

Gibraltar seems set to be named as the 53rd member of Uefa after a landmark ruling on its eligibility by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. The decision that Spanish objections should be ignored may also open the way for Jersey and Guernsey to apply to become members.

Gibraltar's football association was formed in 1895, making it one of the 10 oldest national federations in the world, and it has had an application for Uefa membership pending since 1999 but failed in its previous attempt to join because the governing body adopted a rule which meant that only those recognised by the United Nations as independent states could become members. This happened after pressure from Spain, which still claims sovereignty over the territory which was ceded in perpetuity to Britain under the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht.

In its controversial ruling the CAS decreed: "The executive committee of Uefa is ordered to admit to provisional membership of Uefa the Gibraltar FA at its next executive committee meeting [in October]." Gibraltar will apply for full membership at the Uefa congress next January and, if accepted, will be eligible to enter the qualifying competition for Euro 2012.

"It's our right," said Peter Caruana, Gibraltar's chief minister. "There is now a ruling from the sports tribunal which backs up our claim and we won't stop until Gibraltarian sport gets the recognition it deserves."

Special Olympics: Gibraltarian athletes head for Euro Youth Games, in Rome.

“Get Ready To Play” is the motto for the Special Olympics European Youth Games which will take place in the Eternal City, Rome, Italy, from September 30th-5th October 2006. This will be the first time that a Special Olympics event is focused on young people between the ages of 12 and 21.

The aim of the Youth Games is to encourage young people with and without intellectual disabilities to break down barriers and forge new friendships to help build a more welcoming and inclusive society.

“Many young people with intellectual disabilities will grow up in relative isolation, excluded from their peer group. The Special Olympics European youth Games will promote a message of welcome and inclusion among young people with and without disabilities, transforming difference into acceptance, mutual respect and friendship”, said Michael Smith of Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia.

Taking part away from home for the first time are Special Olympics Gibraltar athletes, Dorrian Zammitt and Douglas Pitaluga. Our two swimmers are pictured with Lawrence Podesta of Lombard Odier Darier Hentch, who, under the sponsor an athlete scheme, have supported the lads with a cheque for £1.200 which will help defray the expenses of the trip.

them are their coaches John and AnaMarie Golding with National director Annie Risso. The boy’s parents will be among those from 57 National Programmes who will be there to support them.

Special Olympics, founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver continues, through the common language of sport to encourage young people with intellectual disabilities to break down barriers and improve the individual’s health, self esteem and social integration.

This is an exciting time for Dorrian and Douglas and as they leave Gibraltar on Wednesday 27th September, all our good wishes for a happy enjoyable time go with you.

    Football: Giraltar Vikings beat Crusaders

The Maranatha Baptist Academy football team allowed one big play and it proved to be their downfall in an 8-0 loss to visiting Gibraltar in a nonconference game Friday.

The Crusaders and Vikings played a scoreless first three quarters before Gibraltar broke through on a key letdown by MBA.

After a sack put Gibraltar in fourth-and-25 from the Crusader 45, Gibraltar's top receiver got free in the Maranatha secondary. Viking senior receiver Clark Lindquist ran a simple post pattern and sophomore quarterback Sam Ausloos found him open. Lindquist hauled in the pass for a 45-yard touchdown with under 8 minutes to play.

“It was a learning experience,” Maranatha football coach Rich Akins said. “We gave him (Lindquist) too much space and he beat us.

“We had too many mistakes. Too many turnovers, too many penalties. We are starting a lot of young kids and we know we will get better with experience. Like I said this is a good learning experience.”

The Crusaders return to action at home Friday against Brookfield Academy in a 4:30 p.m. game.

Cricket: Results from the semi finals of the Murto Cup

    GRAMMARIANS v GCC FINAL.

The Murto Cup semi finals, played over the week-end, resulted in victories for Grammarians and GCC over Calpe CC and Combined Colleges respectively. Highlights of the first match were fine innings of 79 by David Young of Calpe CC and 85 from Hugo Adair for Grammarians on the Saturday. In the Sunday fixture Christian Rocca of GCC missed out on yet another century by one run, Steven Gonzalez, of the same team continued his fine form with the bat with an innings of 70, Paul Harris of Combined Colleges scored 64, whilst in the bowling department Nushan Alwis of Combined Colleges claimed six victims and Gary De’Ath of GCC four.

GRAMMARIANS TOO STRONG FOR DEPLETED CALPE CC.

Calpe CC, already missing some of their “stars”, back in UK to resume their studies, put up a good fight against a Grammarians strengthened by visitors from the UK., in the first of the Murto Cup semi finals played on Saturday at the Victoria Stadium. Batting first they were given a solid start by David Young and Mark Bacarese who put on 57 runs in the opening eleven overs before the latter played over a full toss from Steve McEwan and had his stumps shattered. This brought Karan Aswani to the crease and he helped Young add a further 73 runs for the second wicket, Young hitting anything loose to the boundary and beyond. With the total on 130 Young tried to hit a six too many and was well caught by Ross Harkins on the boundary edge for 79 off the bowling of Hugo Adair; the batsman had hit five sixes and eight fours. Aswani seemed destined for his half century when he swung across a ball from Adair and was judged leg before when eight short of that target. This exposed the long Calpe tail although a brave innings of 43 from Paul Buttigieg saw them reach a total of 207/9 at the end of the allotted forty overs. For the fielding side, McEwan returned figures of 4/29 and there were two wickets apiece for Adair and young Josh Hatcher.

Adair and Harkins gave their side an excellent start with a partnership of 88 in the opening sixteen overs before Harkins was bowled by a rank long hop from Robbie Skinner for 45. Grammarians then lost two wickets cheaply but Adair continued to punish anything loose until he was brilliantly caught by Buttigieg at backward short leg off the bowling of Adam Orfila when fifteen runs short of his century. However by then the game was as well as won Richard Buzaglo completing proceedings by hitting Karen Sadhwani for six in the 37th. over. Orfila and Skinner claimed two scalps each.

GCC STROLL TO A COMFORTABLE WIN.

GCC won the toss on Sunday at the Europa Oval and lost the wicket of Ian Farrell with 32 runs on the board. Kieron Ferrary and Christian Rocca then featured in a second wicket partnership of 106 before the former was adjudged leg before just after reaching his third half century in as many matches. There was to be no respite for the Combined Colleges bowlers, however, as Rocca continued to find the form which has eluded him for some time now, and Steven Gonzalez supported him admirably. The total had passed the 200 mark in only the 27th. over when Rocca was caught one short of his century. The last seven GCC batsmen all failed to get into double figures, but Gonzalez raced to an individual score of 70 to enable his side to reach the impressive total of 274. Nushan Alwis returned fine figures of 6/35 in otherwise sorry looking bowling figures.

Brothers Paul and Chris Harris gave their side an excellent start with a stand of 99 before the entry of Gary De’Ath transformed the whole complexion of the game. He had Paul Harris splendidly stumped by Ferrary for 64 and then proceeded to claim three further victims, including that of the other Harris, to put the result of the match beyond all doubt. Abdul Waheed struck a few blows towards the end to reach a personal 31, but by then the match was beyond the boys from the Costa who ended on 182/8 when the allotted forty overs had been bowled. De’Ath finished with the magnificent figures of 4/18.

    Next Week.

Gibraltar welcomes yet another visiting side from the United Kingdom next Saturday, West End Esher CC (pictured) from the Surrey region. The game is scheduled for the Europa Oval starting at 12.30pm.

Island Games: Isle of Wight chosen as host of 2011 games

The membership of the International Island Games Association have chosen the Isle of Wight as the host island for the Games in 2011.

Seventy-five delegates and observers from across the member islands attended the AGM in Rhodes and heard presentations from local organising committees from the Isle of Wight and Bermuda, both of which had bid to host the event.

Three Executive Committee members visited both islands and presented detailed reports to the member Island Games Associations earlier this year. Since then each association had been encouraged to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of holding the event in the two locations.

However, delegates were impressed by the opportunities for competitors in the Isle of Wight as outlined in the presentation and by the amount of planning and research which had been undertaken by the Island’s organisers.

For the first time the host island has been chosen during a non-Games year. One advantage of this was that delegates had more time to discuss the pros and cons of the option before them, at a time when they were not pre-occupied with the competition itself. It also gives the new host island an extra year in which to prepare for the event.

IGA Chairman, Brian Partington, said that both presentations had been informative and professional and that he is delighted that there is no shortage of islands wishing to host the Games.

Full details of the winning bid can be found on the Isle of Wight’s website at www.iwight.co/islandgames

Cricket: Young Gibraltarians get their first taste of playing on grass.

After an eventful coach journey from Gibraltar, which included a four-hour break mid-way due to engine problems, the Gibraltar development squad arrived at their hotel in La Manga late in the evening on Friday, August 25th.

The squad was comprised of a group of Gibraltar’s most talented 10-14 year old players who have been training as a squad since Easter. The main concepts behind the trip were to give a long term focus to practise throughout the season and to provide an opportunity to play in a different environment. The majority of the players had never even played on a grass outfield!

The facilities at La Manga more than justified the long journey down. Two, full size pitches with superbly kept outfields and six artificial nets with full run ups were available to us. The time put in by Neil De La Brook and George Wombeek of the Spanish Cricket Federation in organising the event ensured that both days ran smoothly and GCA would like to reiterate it’s gratitude to them both.

Two, 35 over fixtures were played against a Spanish U15 team, which also included a number of younger players. Many of the Spanish team were involved in last year’s ECC U15 tournament in Italy and have clearly made rapid progress under the guidance of Neil and George since then.

Game 1, Saturday 26th Aug. Gibraltar won the toss and elected to field.
The Gibraltar players were initially intimidated by playing against a slightly older team, but gave a good account of themselves in the field, restricting Spain to 124 in their 35 overs. The Gibraltarians bowled with discipline, Joss Hatcher the pick of them going for just 15 runs in his 7 overs, picking up a wicket in the process. Spain had their opener Joel Brook to thank for their competitive total, who showed solid technique in batting through with a score of 35 not out.

Gibraltar’s reply began in disastrous fashion, losing opener Kieran Paulis first ball. Things soon got worse for the batting side as they found themselves 53-7 off just 15 overs, due to a combination of impressive bowling from the Spanish and undisciplined batting for the Gibraltarians. Brothers Guy and Philip Dumas showed the Gibraltar top order how to bat with application in putting a stand of 41 together for the eighth wicket, but when Brad Seeking finished off the Gibraltar tail with figures of 3-10, in the 33rd over, Gibraltar were left 16 runs short on 108. In truth Spain’s victory was far more comfortable than the 16 run difference suggests.

Game 2, Sunday 27th August. Spain won the toss and elected to bat.
Spain began positively and had clearly discussed their running between the wickets. The Gibraltar fielders were being put under more pressure by the Spanish openers than on the previous day but Kayron Stagno responded well, running out Joel Brooke with a direct hit. Gibraltar were not bowling as well as on the Saturday and were giving away far too many extras. However, 10 year old Simon Dumas came on and turned the game, taking 2 key wickets in his 4 overs, going for just 6 runs. It was then the turn of the Spanish batsmen to self-destruct, eventually being bowled out for 124, the identical score as on the Saturday.

Gibraltar’s top order had learned from the previous chase and showed far more application at the crease. Scott Chipolina looked extremely comfortable before being trapped leg before for 25. Gibraltar looked to be cruising to victory at 109 for 3 with 5 overs to spare but Ben Girling (2-28) took the key wicket of Joss Hatcher (33) and initiated a mini collapse. However, Kayron Stagno showed good temperament in batting through, straight driving the winning runs in the final over and finishing 11 not out.

The weekend was both hugely enjoyable and valuable for the development of both teams. It was particularly pleasing to see the obvious improvement in standard from the Saturday fixture to the Sunday.

    Golf: Lewis Stagnetto Trophy

Sunday 17th September turned out to be a family affair at the latest Med Golf competition, when young Josh Jones pushed his dad Kevin in to second place to win the Lewis Stagnetto trophy at La Duquesa. Josh is one of Gibraltar’s fast improving youngsters and as well as winning the sponsor’s crystal trophy, now takes his place in the Med Golf Masters at Valderrama on Sunday 5th November. There was some consolation for dad Kevin when, along with Josh, he won the day’s “top team” prize. Third place went to another improving golfer in Mike Welsh, with Rob Whatley taking the “senior” prize, Julie Brewer was “top lady” and one of Med Golf’s regulars, Les Housley, winning the days “star quality” player award.

Amongst the other prizewinners, nearest the pin winners were Mike Cowburn, Denny To, Rodney Sheriff, Frank Samways and Ian Blair, with Johann Olivera having the lowest combined score on the par 3’s. Dan Aldridge had the longest drive, with Rob Whatley recording the best round of the day.

Josh now joins all the other previous 14, competition winners for the Med Golf Masters, which Blue Sky Management, Aage Marine Hempel Marine Electronics and Aloha Bookies sponsor this year. There is just one qualification event left and this is at Dehessa Montenmedio on Sunday 15th October where SG Hambros are the sponsors. This is always a very popular venue anyway and with it also being such an important event, a big turnout is expected. You can make sure of your tee time by ringing Johnathan Goodson on Spain (0034) 639 741 886 or e-mail him at jg@medgolf.gi

The full tournament schedule and information on the substantial green fee discounts available to Med Golf members is on the web site www.teetimespain.com

Football: Gibraltar on the verge of becoming a UEFA member

Gibraltar’s admission into UEFA is now taken as a foregone conclusion in Spain, according to some of the most influential news media in the country.

Reports about the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision backing the local application for membership, yesterday spread like wildfire across the leading sports dailies and media in the country.

Meanwhile UEFA president Lennart Johansson last night declared that Europe’s soccer ruling body will not take into account any possible complaints or threats from Spain following the decision by CAS. Mr Johanson is quoted as saying:

“This is something that goes beyond the purely sporting issue and into politics. There is nothing we can do about it, and following the decision by the Tribunal for Arbitration and Sport, Gibraltar will be a full member of UEFA.”

It is understood that Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Angel Villar was informed of this possibility, at a recent meeting of the UEFA executive committee earlier this summer. Sr Villar has declined to comment on the latest developments.

CAS is the highest sports tribunal in Europe and there is no mechanism for appeal against its decisions.

    Media Interest

The Cadena Ser flagship sports programme ‘El Larguero’ was preparing a feature on the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) application last night, and seeking an interview with president Joey Nunez to explain the favouble CAS ruling.

Meanwhile the breakfast radio ‘tertulias’ linked Spain’s European Championship qualifier against Northern Ireland that was played yesterday, with the failure at this summer’s world cup tournament in Germany, anticipating a future world cup qualifying tie versus Gibraltar with a mixture of incredulity and sarcasm.

For its part Canal Sur yesterday quoted a spokesman for Foreign Secretary Miguel Angel Moratinos saying that Spain will do “whatever is necessary,” so that UEFA’s current regulations are applied and Gibraltar’s admission is not allowed. It said the Spanish Government had yesterday been notified of the CAS ruling instructing the UEFA executive committee to consider Gibraltar’s admission on a provisional basis at the forthcoming meeting in October. The last hurdle Gibraltar would have to clear to obtain full membership status, is the approval of the UEFA congress that will take place in Germany in late January 2007. Sr Moratinos spokesman added:

“Spain will examine the ruling closely, will defend its interests and do whatever is necessary to uphold the existing UEFA regulation.”

The regulation in question which was introduced at the time of the GFA application in 1999, says that only states that are recognised by the United Nations can be accepted as members of UEFA.

    Opposition Angry at Spain

Meanwhile, the GSLP/Liberal Opposition has welcomed the news that the Gibraltar Amateur Rowing Association (GARA) has been admitted as a full member of the European Federation.

Congratulating GARA for their achievement they believe the European Federation will open new avenues for further success.

“It is regrettable that on the eve of this announcement, the Spanish Foreign Ministry said that they will do whatever is necessary so that UEFA does not allow the Gibraltar Football Association to join as a member,” says the Alliance adding that it is totally inconsistent for Spain to threaten further action against Gibraltar in one sport when they have just had to concede our membership in another.

“While it is not clear what Spain will do, it will be recalled that in the past the Spanish Football Federation has threatened to withdraw its clubs from European competitions if Gibraltar is admitted.”

The Opposition is urging the Spanish Government to “stop politicising the issue and to accept that Gibraltar sportsmen and women have the same right as everyone else to represent their country in international events.”

There was a good turn up of players with 30+ players registering on the night.

Top players hadn’t lost their sparks from last year after a good summer break. This shows the dedication players are giving to the game.

Right from the start of the tournament, names such as Dylan Duo and Francis Taylor stood out for the quality of darts both where throwing in their games. However others too from the outset such as Eric Segui, Angel Debono and Henry Zapata were going to make it a good battle if they were going to be defeated by the big guns this time.

After several great games played by a couple of players, we had the semi-final line-up. The first game was played by Angel Debono and Henry Zapata, which finished with a score of 3-1 in favour of Henry (after a great battle Henry showed his form with very sharp finishing).

The final saw the game between two training partners, this meaning they could each use their opponents weaknesses against each other. Pool: New rules for Gibraltar leagues.

    BAULK LINE
There is no longer a “D”, there will only be a “Baulk line”. The cue ball may be placed anywhere BEHIND the line.
    FOUL BREAK
After a foul break (2 balls do not pass middle pocket) you have a choice of:
    • Leaving the balls as they are and playing the white ball from where it is.
    • Re-racking and playing the white ball from behind the baulk line as in a normal break (with two visits)
    PLAYING AFTER A FOUL BREAK
You have to pot a colour legally on the second visit to determine your colour group. If you pot a ball on the first shot but fail to pot a ball on the second shot the table will remain “open”.
    BREAK
Potting a ball: If you pot a ball off the break you carry on playing but the table is “open” until a player pots a colour legally
Not potting off the break: If you do not pot a ball the table remains “open” until a player pots a colour legally.
POTTING BOTH COLOURS OFF THE BREAK OR WHEN OPEN TABLE
If you pot a red and a yellow off the break or at anytime before determining your colour group the table remains “open” until a single colour is potted legally.
USING A YELLOW TO POT A RED OR VICE-VERSA
You may play a yellow to pot a red or play a red to pot a yellow when the table is “open”, the colour of the potted ball will determine your colour group.
USING THE BLACK TO POT A COLOUR
You may not use the black to pot a colour after the break unless it is on a “foul” and you play the black on your first visit. In this instance the table will remain “open” until the next colour is potted legally.
    DETERMINING COLOUR GROUP
The first colour potted legally after the break determines the colour group.
    CUSHIONS
With every shot taken you must either pot a ball or cause the cue ball or any other ball to contact a cushion after the white strikes the object ball. The only exception to this is when you are fully snookered (see below note on Full Snookers).
    FROZEN BALL TO CUSHION
If you play a colour ball which is “frozen” to a cushion (it is touching the cushion) that colour ball must be potted or either that ball or any other ball (including the white) must touch a different cushion (the white may touch that same cushion but if it does not then the frozen ball or any other colour ball must touch a different cushion).
    FULL SNOOKERS
If you are snookered fully (you cannot see either side of the object ball) you MUST get the referee to acknowledge the snooker. This is the only instance when you do not have to play a shot and have a ball hit a cushion after contact.
    POTTING LAST BALL AND BLACK
You may pot your last colour and the black in the same pocket to win the frame.
    TIME RULE
The time rule will not be applicable. The same rules on time will apply as in previous years. Common sense and good sportsmanship should prevail at all times, if a player is deemed to be taking too long he/she should be warned and asked to take less time over the shot. The referee is solely responsible for this.
