Football: Liverpool Legends to play Rock 11
The two teams for the Rock XI vs Liverpool Legends match in aid of Research into Childhood Cancer have been announced, adding fuel to the fire of anticipation around Gibraltar. The match is scheduled for Tuesday 3rd October 2006, kick off at 6.45pm.
The aim of the Rock XI vs Liverpool Legends Football Match is to raise awareness and as much money as possible for Research Into Childhood Cancer. The idea originated during a casual conversation between the would-be organisers where the concept of holding an original and above all profitable event in aid of charity was discussed.
Once the idea of challenging the Liverpool Legends to a football match was mentioned there was only one project that was ever going to be pursued. Thankfully, we have been lucky enough to find great support from the Liverpool Former Players Association, the Government of Gibraltar, the relevant Sporting Authorities, and our sponsors and event organisers Santos Productions in order to bring this project to fruition.
We now count on the support of the community to make the event a resounding success.
We hope that the event will exceed everybody's expectations and we manage to raise a substantial amount of money for this worthy cause.Research Into Childhood Cancer (RICC) is a Gibraltar based charity (No.49) whose aim is to contribute towards finding a cure for cancer in children. In particular, RICC funds a research project specifically targeting Neuroblastoma. The research team works out of Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and, over the years, they have made groundbreaking progress in developing a vaccine to cure those suffering from this disease. This obviously has worldwide implications as all the large research bodies work closely together. RICC has proudly played a role in this, but there is still more work to be done.
RICC was started up in 1989 by Margaret and Anthony Sacarello shortly after their son, Philip, died of Neuroblastoma when only 9 years of age. It has since developed into a very popular local charity for a number of reasons. Needless to say, most people can relate to the nature of this disease and its impact on the child and the family unit as a whole. Additionally, RICC has always striven to look for innovative and fun ways of raising money, attempting to give back something in return and always welcomes ideas from the general public.
