The final day of the Women's Cup Winners Cup Trophy was held today in Gibraltar. (click on images to enlarge)
The two teams promoted were the Ukranian team Dinamo Sumchanka and the French team, Lille Metropole, who yesterday struggled to beat the Gibraltarian side Eagles.
The final games were close encounters, with scores of 4-3 for the Ukrainians and 4-2 for the French. The latter of the games was played in some very humid conditions. Both teams however, gave it their all and worked hard to try and push their side to the coveted promotion to the B Division.
After the French game an award ceremony was held, where the Minister for sport attended along with some of the Senior EHF officials.
The tournament was heralded by all as a great event and all those involved in the preparation and running of the event were thanked, from the ball boys to the ground staff. A big thank you should go to all of the Eagles organisers and players who made the event such a success. They are true amabassdors for Gibraltar. Thank you.

Eagles Hockey Club (click on image to enlarge) have recently been very busy, for both their senior men and women respectively taking part in European Competitions. The men did really well in Malta coming in third spot and just missing out on promotion. The ladies have had a very tough competition to compete in and had already suffered a 5-0 and 8-0 defeat (results below). Until yesterday, when in front of a supportive crowd they managed to restrict the goal margin to a very respectable 3-1.
Their opponenets were Lille Metropole from France who have been doing very well in the competition. The French team looked stronger from the start and managed to score within the first five minutes. It looked like the local girls were in for a damage limitation exercise. This, however was not so and the girls battled hard in defending their D, with some excellent saves from the Eagles' keeper.
The French team did eventually, manage to squeeze another goal. Shortly after the Eagles seemed to find heart in conceeding what was an unorthodox goal. Eagles began passing more consistently and their possession and territroy increased substantially. This led to a lot of pressure with their opposition's D, which led to a few short corners in the Eagles' favour. The ladies capitalised on this opportunity to score their first Cup Winner's Cup goal, much to their delight and the partisan crowd.
The game continued very much in the same way, with the local girls making several good attacks on the Lille goal. The French however did manage to snatch another goal to make the final score 3-1. Our local girls should be given credit in what was a great example of determination and pride.
In their final game today the girls lost by 3-0 against HC Olten. There is no demotion from the competition so we hope the girls will use this experience to continue working hard and use this experience to further their hockey ambitions.

Minsk, Cardiff win promotion in EuroHockey Cup Winners Challenge By MM Sports Apr 8, 2007 -
The Men's BDO EuroHockey Cup Winners Challenge hosted at the Corradino Hockey Complex came to an end today with the final three games.
In the first game HK Zelina beat Seijanoki Utd 4-0 with all four goals coming in the first half. The Croatian goals were scored by Edo Jalzabetic and Nikola Jalzabetic who each scored two.The Croatians also missed two penalty strokes.
The last two games were the matches that decided the promotions. In the first game, RCOR-MIF Minsk surprised favourites Eagles HC from Gibraltar by three goals to two. For the Belorussians it was a positive end to a positive tournament. Stefan Rodriguez put Eagles into the lead after 11 mins from a penalty corner but by the end of the half Minsk had turned the score around with goals from Yauhen Velihon and Allaksand Hancharov.
Eagles came out strongly in the second half and their efforts were rewarded with a goal from penalty corner specialist Gareth Henwood. Things were pointing to extra time until nine minutes from time Allaksand Hancharov got his second goal from a short corner to give promotion to Belorussian side.
The final game of the tournament saw Cardiff University win promotion with a straight forward victory over Slagelse HC from Denmark. An early goal after 7 mins from Martyn White got the ball rolling and a second from the same player before the half time gave Cardiff a two goal cushion. Cardiff, who impressed with their fitness, scored a further two goals from Gavin Vollmer and David Hughes before Slaglese pulled one back through Jesper Sorensen. White notched up his hat-thrick with the fifth goal a minute from time.
With these three goals White equalled Stefan Rodriguez (Eagles HC) as the tournament top scorers while Christian Nielsen (Slagelse HK) was voted Tournament Best Player.
Final Positions were as follows:
1. RCOR-MIF Minsk (Promoted)
1. Cardiff University (Promoted)
3. Eagles HK
3. Slagelse HK
5. Sliema Hs
5. HK Zelina

After 4 very long months I can happily say that I am finally on my way again tomorrow. Yes it has been 4 months since my visa problems in Morocco, as frustratingly painful as it has been; it turned out to be 4 very important months in my life. Had I kept going I'm sure of it that I would have had many problems with equipment failure and visas. I will leave Gibraltar stronger, better equipped and much more patient. The kayak is now also equipped with and outrigger, the reason for this is to allow me to sleep on the sea and do longer spells on the water due to the problems I will be facing in some African countries.
I would like to say thank you to everyone who went out of their way to help me to get everything sorted so I can get back on the water. Special thank you to Clover Cargo, epic kayaks,Andre de Barr, Ettienne my brother, Willem Hart and Nigel Jefferies. Without their help and support this expedition would have been stranded. André de Barr, the owner of the Tunnel restaurant in Gibraltar helped me by giving me free meals every day while I was in Gib, he also let me stay on his boat in the marina and went even further by sponsoring me with a Satellite phone, credit and a desalinator .Thank you so much Andre and everyone els for the help.
We hope to get the video footage I took in Europe on the website soon. My Sat phone number and cell number will be on http://www.k4a.co.za/ contact page. So feel free to send me a text or give me a call whenever you like. Also ,just a reminder for those who don?t know, I am raising money to open an Sports shelter for children infected and affected with HIV/AIDS and street children in South Africa. So please show your support by a small donation on the donations page or by offering your skills, ideas or prayers. With Dreams of the future
Former Liverpool and England football star John Barnes is to visit Gibraltar. The visit, lasting three days from Sunday to Tuesday next week, has been organized and sponsored by the Services Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC). SSVC is a charity that is set up to entertain and inform Britain’s armed forces around the world.
John is visiting primarily to participate in training sessions for the Combined Services Youth Football club, but is also running a training session for children at Bayside School on Monday. Also included in the itinerary is a tour of the Upper Rock and a trip around the Rock with Gibraltar Squadron.
The Opposition welcome Gibraltar’s participation as a separate country in the World Swimming championships that are currently taking place in Melbourne, Australia. There are 194 national swimming federations that belong to FINA, the international swimming federation.
The championships include swimming, open water swimming, water polo, diving and synchronized swimming. It is significant to note that Spain is also participating in this event regardless of the presence and participation of swimmers from Gibraltar. The championships started on 17 March and will continue until 1 April.
The Opposition considers that it is hugely ironic that Spanish swimmers are allowed to compete against Gibraltar swimmers in an international context, while at the same time the Gibraltar Football Association has to continue its fight to be admitted as a full member of UEFA following the pressure exerted by the Spanish Government to keep them out. This makes the approach taken by the Spanish Football Federation, on instructions from the Spanish Foreign Ministry, totally indefensible.
Commenting on the matter, Acting Shadow Minister for Sport Steven Linares said:“The Opposition firmly believes that the Spanish Foreign Ministry should stop mixing politics with sport. They should do so by revoking the edict of the Consejo Superior de Deportes which instructs Spanish sporting federations to object to the membership and participation of Gibraltar teams in international sporting associations. The Consejo Superior de Deportes is an organ of the Spanish Government.”Mr Linares added: “The Opposition therefore wish our swimmers in Meblourne all the very best in representing their country abroad. I am sure that their participation in an international event will give everyone invaluable experience for the future.
What a pity that our football teams continue to be deprived of the same experience by the deplorable attitude of Spain.”

Last years semi-finals successes between Justin Broton & Dylan Duo in both the British Darts Organisation ‘International Torremolinos Open’ and The Kronenbourg 1664 ‘Gibraltar Open’ where bettered twice over when both men joined forces to play together at the Torremolinos Open this year.
A historical event for Gibraltar dart players by winning a first major international open event and as such be the 1st Gibraltarians to be inscribed in the famous British Darts Organisation yearbook & diary.
With players from the United Kingdom looking for ranking points it makes the lives of any outsider a common impossibility but not this year.
With previous pairs winners such as: Peter Evison (World Masters champion), Paul Williams (Finland Open Champion), Aaron Turner (Youth World Masters champion) and Dennis Ovens (to mention but a few), all now consummate professionals; it is an honour to have 2 Gibraltarians listed amongst such calibre of darting men.
Lets hope that this recent success will be the ice breaker on the more than common shortfall of local players at international events.
With the GPA doubles competition coming to a close, this Tuesday sees the start of the GPA singles championship.
Competition is likely to be fierce with Julian McGrail looking to defend the title he won last year against Francis Becerra.
Matches to start at 8:30pm and are best of 5. Winners then go through to the next round the following week.
There will be a break between the 2nd and 3rd rounds as the national teams are again heading to the World Championships. Good Luck to all involved in both competitions.
