Football: When Saturday Come's article on Gibraltar's application to UEFA

The Spanish aren’t happy, but UEFA could soon have another member if the British Territory can see off some last-minute objections. Tim Stannard reports from the sunny Mediterranean.

The British territory of Gibraltar is famous for a number of things – purse snatching monkies, tax dodging businessmen and a giant rock, for starters – but certainly not football. All that is about to change, as UEFA are on the brink of making the pint-sized peninsula their 53rd member, enabling a team to join the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

For those who are already fed up with Europe’s tiniest territories clogging up the international schedule, the notion of Gibraltar joining in, too, must seem like complete madness. After all, Gibraltar were beaten 2-0 by the might of Northern Cyprus in an “alternative Wirld Cup” tournament held in Hamburg just before Germany 2006- although they once gave Sark a 19-goal drubbing. More important, Gibraltar isn’t even a proper country.

Nevertheless, this minor nationalistic detail is not necessarily a show-stopper for Gibraltar’s FA, which first submitted a request for full membership to Europe’s governing body in 1997. UEFA already include England and Wales in their fold which aren’t independent states but parts of a larger one, so not “proper countries” , either - and the Faroe Islands, an autonomous region of Denmark.

Although the organisation changed their entry parameters in 1999 so that only those who were also members of the United Nations could apply (and subsequently) , the campaign team has not given up its battle. “It’s our right” said Peter Caruana, the territories Chief Minister, in September.

The bid’s supporter’s claim that under the original UEFA statues, territories of Gibraltar’s nature were permitted to join the organisation – as in the Faroes’ case- so the rejection of their request was unjust and discriminatory. “You can’t have on rule for one and one for the other,” says Robert Azopardi of SportGibraltar.com, pointing out that the territory has been a member of leading sporting bodies for some time, including athletics IAAF.

It is an argument that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is Lausanne backed in September, when it declared that UEFA should award Gibraltar provisional membership at their meeting in October. With this breakthrough, the end of Gibraltar’s long journey for recognition seemed over. However, there was one last obstacle to be overcome – the neighbour to the north.

For nearly three centuries, Gibraltar has been a two-kilometre-long thorn in the side of Spain, ever since it was ceded to Great Britain in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht. Throughout this period, the mainland has steadfastly has steadfastly refused to give up its claims on the territory, so it’s no real surprise that the current government is apologetic at the thought of Gibraltar joining UEFA. They perceive such an event as a blow to their sovereignty aspirations as well as being a dangerous fillip to the independence campaigns the Basque country and Catalunya.

Days after CAS made its ruling, Angel Villar, the president of the Spanish FA and a UEFA vice-president forced the latter to postpone their deliberation until January with a last-minute appeal, which claimed that Gibraltar’s footballing facilities were locate don disputed land – “the Spanish state is charged with the task of defending its interests”, said Villar to El Pais.

Gibraltar’s supporters fear that UEFA could eventually reject their claim for fear of upsetting one of their key members – an attitude that has infuriated Joey Nunez, the President of the territory’s FA. “It’s a scandalous way of behaving,” Nunez said on UEFA’s decision to delay their discussions. He was supported in his protests by Gibraltar’s MEP Neil Parish, who wrote to UEFA’s chief executive, Lars-Christer Olsson, to “urge UEFA not to succumb to these petty Spanish efforts to deprive Gibraltar of its rightful place”.

The opportunity of joining the elite ranks of European football is seen by Gibraltar’s 27,000-strong population as a way of carrying on what they consider to be a proud footballing tradition, stretching as far back as 1895 with the creation of the FA.

Although the players of the territory’s three divisions will be of a completely different class to those they may well face in the years to come, they are hoping that their bid to join UEFA’s ranks is judged on its own merits and not on political expediency.

Rhythmic Gymnastics: Gibraltar's gymnasts performed passionately in Chiclana at Pabellon Deportivo Sports Hall last Saturday

Gibraltar's gymnasts performed passionately in Chiclana at Pabellon Deportivo Sports Hall last Saturday. Their performance earned them third place amongst national competitors from Malaga, Seville, Cordoba and Jerez, to name some of the few. Their trip to Chiclana began at 7am, which culminated in an exhausting yet exciting day for the girls, finally announcing them winners.

The first group to appear, Benjamin, won third place and so did the Infantil group who performed gymnastics, whilst throwing red balls in the air and catching them gracefully. The Gibraltar Rhythmic Gymnastics Association (GRGA) owned by Richard Bear has four coaches exercising thorough discipline and also where useful techniques are introduced. The school runs an excellence service for girls ranging from four to sixteen years.

An air of orderliness is immediately felt on watching the performances. On entering, girls must have their chin up, perfect posture and walk elegantly on their tip toes. Everything is balanced and in proportion as they get ready for a sport that requires proper method. Great emphasis is given on the music because it reflects the movements of gymnastics, be it graceful or energetic.

Also, if the music does not mirror the gymnast's movement, they are marked down. One of the coaches echoes this when she says: "They have to do a certain sequence and everything must be in order". Points are also deducted if apparatus, such as red balls, ropes, hoops, clubs or ribbons are not thrown in sync; or if the girls do not catch them by a slip of the hand

Before commencing the event, preliminary muscle stretching is paramount because it allows the body to get used to vigorous exercise. Moreover, gymnasts must have a strong back that will enable them to support themselves whilst performing. Sally Holmes, National Coach, stresses the importance of stretching: “Without proper stretching, gymnastics can be dangerous because the girls can hurt themselves”.

The “ooo’s” and the “ahhss” from the ladies in the audience confirmed how they admired the several shiny leotards, covered with glitzy diamantes. One of the mothers commented how she purchased an unusual leotard for her daughter from Russia: “It was a lovely outfit, adorned with Swarvoski crystals. It cost me £280”. So although this exercise requires discipline, it does not prevent the gymnasts from beautifying their faces with glitter on their eyes and twisting their hair into classy hairstyles.

The “Prima National” is one of the biggest national competitions held in Spain. To compete, the team has to be of Spanish nationality. When asked if this puts a spanner in their efforts, Sally replied: "We get invited because they like us and we are good". Actually, they were better than good, they were excellent, which explains why they end up walking away with two shiny trophies. Congratulations to the whole team!

Basketball: FIBA meetings held in Gibraltar decide Madrid as venue for U18 Euro Champs

FIBA executives from Spain and around Europe, attended a senior meeeting held in Gibraltar. The Spanish officials attended despite Gibraltar being recognised as a seperate entity to the U.K. and Spain in international basketball. This action is contrary to the Spanish Government's ressitance in accpeting Gibraltar as a UEFA member.

John Goncalves (pictured) one of FIBA Europe's most senior members chaired the event.

In the executive comittee meeting held on the morning of the 14th November 06, in Gibraltar, FIBA Europe decided that Madrid will be the site of the next U18 European Championship for men, held on August 3rd-12th. This is just a taste of what is in store for Spain, as the most promising teams in Europe will gather here for EuroBasket 07.

The locations and dates of the national training leagues´ tournaments were among the points determined in the FIBA Europe executive committee meeting. Spain, specifically Madrid, was chosen to organize the U18 European Championship Men. In this competition Spain currently holds the bronze medal, and last summer´s U16 gold medal winning team will participate this year. Young talent such as Pablo Aguilar, Pere Tomás and Ricky Rubio will be put to the test against the biggest competitors on the continent.

The rest of the dates and locations will be the following:

    European U16 Women: Valnier (Latvia) - July 27 - August 5
European U18 Women: Novi Sad (Serbia) - July 1-8
European U20 Women: Sofía (Bulgary) - July 13-22
European U16 Men: Crete (Greece) - July 20-29
European U18 Men: Madrid (Spain) -August 3-12
    European U20 Men: Gorizia (Slovenia-Italy) -July 6-15

Darts: Friendship Cup 2006/07 a great success

    GDA – FRIENDSHIP CUP 2006/07

It truly is a night where all teams come out of the woodwork, always unpredictable, always jam-packed.

Lets start with a bit of history “The 'Friendship Cup' donated by Mr. Bill Gibson, the Leicestershire (UK) secretary was introduced in 1979. Mr Joe McCarthy, the Gibraltar Darts Association secretary at the time and Mr. John Trinidad travelled to Leicester to collect this brilliant cup. The first team to win this cup was a five-man team from St. Theresa's Social Club”.

27 Years later, nothing has changed and the Friendship Cup still remains one of the best team events to be won on the Rock.

With 10 teams participating out of the 12 teams in the league it sure was an eventful evening.

At the preliminary stages the currently top of the league in the 2nd division (Stan James Edinburgh Arms) where drawn against R/J Cosmos (previously Gib Utd). Although they played very well with some games won by a marginal 2-1 deficit, it however showed why R/J Cosmos are previous winners of the event and furthermore why they are in the 1st division. They where just too strong for them and they won 5-0. Unfortunately this meant that the Edinburgh Arms had an early departure from the tournament.

The 1st upset of the night however was induced early on in the 1st round by the St. Joseph’s team and yet again against the veterans of the game the R/J Cosmos.

In an enthralling match where the R/J Cosmos team took a healthy 2-0 lead, the St. Joseph’s team managed to level the game at 2-2 and the decider to be played by Alan Kimberley (R/J Cosmos) against Nicholas Barbara (St. Joseph’s). An under performing Alan Kimberley was just not up to the job and Nicholas simply took full advantage and gave St. Joseph’s the win.

Here is the draw as it happened on the night

As always lots of 180’s thrown in fact 7 in total by: 2 x Dylan Duo, 1 x Henry Zapata, 1 x Francis Taylor, 1 x George Federico, 1 x Vinnie Ryan, 1 x Manolo Vilerio Rodriquez (unlucky Manolo on your attempt at the 170 finish, very close).
After a tougher draw to get to the final by the St. Joseph’s team, the College Cosmos team where quite happy in progressing unnoticed and simply waiting for no further surprises and meet St. Joseph’s in the final. As expected, that’s exactly what happened.

The final saw yet again last year’s teams, College Cosmos & St. Joseph’s (previously known as Rock Cosmos).

The individual player order for each team was drawn on two separate sheets and each opposing team does not know the order of play of the other team’s players (yet another exciting point about the Friendship Cup). In an unexpected twist the St. Joseph’s team decided to play their strongest player 2nd “El Crack de el equipo” – as they put it, Dyson Parody (they had been playing him 1st all night).

Whether this move was intentional or not, it proved to be the wrong decision as it turned out Dylan Duo was also drawn 2nd for the College Cosmos and that meant the two hound dogs of each team had a full blown face off.

In team events one always tries to guarantee points not challenge them. In past experiences many a team has fallen to this pitfall, in playing strong players against strong players on a 50/50 chance that your player might win. That’s exactly what a team should not do and this time it worked in favour of the College Cosmos team.

The 1st game of the final featured an irregular Henry Zapata (College Cosmos) against Takahashi Schimidzu but Henry managed to pull through and win 3-0.

The 2nd game was played by Dylan Duo against Dyson Parody. Although Dyson started strong and won the 1st leg, Dylan persisted and took the game 3-1. Making it 2-0 for the College Cosmos team.

The 3rd and what we now know was to be the final game, was won by Justin Broton against the hero of the night for the St. Joseph’s team, Nicholas Barbara. The game was won by Justin 3-0

Having won 3 of the possible 5 games, the College Cosmos team took the final to become the “The Friendship Cup winners 2006/07”.

It was a good night for the College Cosmos team, they only lost 1 single leg in the whole event and they retain the Friendship Cup, which they also won last year.

Martial Arts: Gibraltar taekwondo squad returns from Sheffield

Back on 26th October 2006, a selected team from the British Taekwondo Control Board Gibraltar flew over to Sheffield to take part in the Ultimate Taekwondo Championships, which were held on Sunday 29th October 2006.

Our four players Alex Trinidad, Jansen Reyes, Brandon Tosso and Keith Chichon did extremely well in the competition. They took part in the following Kyrougi (sparring) categories:

    Alex Trinidad - Junior - 72 Kgs
    Jansen Reyes - Senior - 72 Kgs
    Brandon Tosso - Senior - 78 Kgs
    Keith Chichon - Senior - 84 Kgs

There were a total of approximately 400 competitors. 250 players competed for the Kyrougi (sparring) competition whilst the remaining 150 competed for the Poomsae (pattern) competition. There were teams from different regions throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Even the National Northern Ireland Team took part in the event. There were also teams from Italy, Portugal, Poland and even from as far as Afghanistan.

Both A. Trinidad and K. Chichon ended their participation at the championships, losing their relevant matches at the semi-finals. Unfortunately, J. Reyes only made it to the quarter-finals.

    B. Tosso made a good turn out at the quarter-finals when he scored 4-2 against one of the Northern-Ireland players who had only 2 weeks ago, won a Bronze medal at the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union Championships held in Australia. His participation ended when played at the semi-finals.

The ending result was well deserved as three of our players (A. Trinidad, B. Tosso & K. Chichon) obtained a Bronze Medal each.

On behalf of BTCB Gibraltar, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our 4 players and our 2 coaches Ernest & Edward Garcia, who accompanied them to Sheffield, for their dedication and persistence shown these past couple of months. Also, I would like to thank Master Kathy Barwell (organiser of the Championships) and her club members from Doncaster who had the time to train with our team, a few days before the event took place.
