His Worship the Mayor, Solomon Levy MBE,ED,JP hosted an Official Reception on Wednesday 10 December 2008 at the City Hall, in honour of the 50th Anniversary of the Commonwealth Games Association.

The first Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada where 11 countries sent 400 athletes to take part in 6 sports and 59 events. Bobby Robinson, a major influence within athletics in Canada at....

the time, finally implemented the event that had been talked about amongst Commonwealth nations for over thirty years with the City of Hamilton providing $30,000 to help cover travelling costs of the participating nations.

Since then, the Games have been conducted every four years (except for 1942 and 1946 due to World War II) and the event has seen many changes, not least in its name. From 1930 to 1950 the Games were known as the British Empire Games, from 1954 until 1966 the British Empire and Commonwealth Games and from 1970 to 1974 they took on the title of British Commonwealth Games. It was the 1978 Games in Edmonton that saw this unique, world class, multi-sports event change its name to the Commonwealth Games.

Often referred to as the ‘Friendly Games’ only single competition sports had been on the programme from 1930 up to and including the 1994 Games in Victoria. The 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur saw the introduction of team sports with nations taking part in cricket (50 over game), hockey (men and women), netball (women) and rugby 7's (men). In Manchester in 2002 hockey, netball and rugby 7's graced the programme again and at the 2006 Games in Melbourne basketball accompanied hockey, netball and rugby 7's on the programme. In Delhi in 2010 hockey, netball and rugby 7’s will again feature.

The 2002 Games in Manchester also saw for the first time, indeed at any multi-sport event in the world, a limited number of full medal events for elite athletes with a disability (EAD) in a fully inclusive sports programme. This continued in Melbourne where EAD athletes took part in athletics, swimming, table tennis and powerlifting.

In the year 2000 the CGF took on the added responsibility of the Commonwealth Youth Games, open to athletes 18 years of age and under the Youth Games provide an excellent opportunity for aspiring young athletes from the Commonwealth with a taste of what the Commonwealth Games has in store for them in the future. The inaugural Games were in Edinburgh with the last edition being hosted in 2004 in Bendigo, Australia with Pune in India in 2008 hosting the 3rd edition. In such a short space of time the Youth Games has grown in stature and this is evidenced by award of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games to the Isle of Man.

The story of the Games evolved yet again on the 9th November 2007 when Glasgow (Scotland) was awarded the right to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Gibraltar Shooting Federation recently hosted the Commonwealth Shooting Federation European Division 2008 Championships from today Friday 26th to Sunday 28th September at the 3 shooting ranges by Europa point.

This competition is held every two years in different European Commonwealth Countries, the last competition was held in Jersey.

The championship has had a tremendous response. It is by far the biggest turn out for the past 15 years, over 140 shooters representing Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Malta, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, and Gibraltar.

The championship consisted of competitions in various disciplines such as Air/rifle, Rifle, Pistol and Clay, teams, individual competitions. The championship also caterd for development shooters which helped them gain experience in techniques and different aspects of shooting

World class shooters and former Commonwealth games gold, silver and bronze medallists were amongst the visitors who experienced the unique variety of different conditions which the Gibraltar ranges had to offer.

The Gibraltar Shooting Federation warmly welcomed all the shooters to the rock. A. Buhagiar, GSF secretary.

The spectacular sporting bonanza has unfolded in the cultural capital of Maharashtra. Pune is the proud host of the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008. An independent multi sports event, the Youth Games are a run up and a trial event to the Commonwealth Games 2010 to be held in Delhi.

Pune is renowned for hosting several world class events, including India’s oldest Marathon. World class sports facilities, modern infrastructure, excellent connectivity by multiple means of transport and a rich cultural heritage coupled with salubrious climate, indeed vouch for Pune’s candidature as the host city for the III Commonwealth Youth Games 2008.

It is for the FIRST time, that the Commonwealth Youth Games will be held in Asia – in 2008.

The Inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland from 10th to 14th August 2000.

The II Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Bendigo, Australia from 30th November to 3rd December 2004.

The III Commonwealth Youth Games will be held in Pune from the 12th to 18th October 2008. Over 1,300 athletes and 350 officials from 71 countries will participate in these games, in 9 disciplines -Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling are included in the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008.

Apart from the athletes, team officials and Games technical Conduct Officials, there will be representatives from the National and International Federations alongwith the representatives of Print and Electronic media.

The Commonwealth Youth Games are an extremely significant event for India as they will form the back-bone for her quest for maximum Medals in the Delhi 2010 Games. The Youth Games will also serve to identify India’s medal winning potential athletes for the Asian Games 2014 and the Olympic Games 2016.

The most unique feature of these games is their venue, Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex. The venue of the III Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 i.e. Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City, Balewadi, is unique as it is for the first time that the competition venues of all disciplines and the athletes’ village will be housed in a single sports complex. Located on 153 acres of land, on the outskirts of Pune, it is all set to host the international competitive multi-sporting event.

VINET WELCOMES HOME COMMONWEALTH TEAM

Fabian Vinet, Minister for Sport, yesterday welcomed back to Gibraltar the team that participated at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Mr Vinet – who together with the CEO of the Sports and Leisure Authority, Joe Hernandez, was in Melbourne during the initial stages of competition – visited the team at the Games Village and saw the accommodation and administration facilities provided to them. He also witnessed some of the events in which they participated and commented:

“It was a welcome experience to see for myself the very high standard of competition which our sportsmen and women met, as well as the commendable and promising results achieved. The highlight must be the excellent performance by Heloise Mañasco in the Air Rifle Shooting. She achieved a fantastic second place in the pre-Games Commonwealth Shooting Federation Badge Shoot with a most impressive National Record score of 398 out of a possible 400. In the Games proper Heloise was the first ever Gibraltar participant to reach a Commonwealth Games Final, finishing a very meritorious eighth, amongst a really world-class field. Our swimmers also achieved their objective of breaking a record number of National Records. In general, all our participants represented Gibraltar with great pride and effort, proving that their hard preparatory work for the Games had been worthwhile. Prior to the team leaving for Australia, I told them that the competition would be tough but that I was certain they would make Gibraltar proud. That is what they have done and all must be congratulated for the splendid way in which they represented the Rock.”

During his stay in Melbourne, Mr Vinet also attended the Third Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ Meeting, at which it was agreed to promote the benefits of Sport by encouraging Sport and Health ministries to work together and to promote healthy living through sports programmes. Present at the meeting were most of the Commonwealth countries and territories and matters of concern to all were discussed in a concerted effort to continue the development of sport in all regions. Commenting on this Meeting, Mr Vinet explained:

“The need for political and financial commitment to sport was one of the matters highlighted at the meeting. I had the opportunity of speaking to a wide range of influential individuals, including the Ministers for Sport of Halifax (Canada) and Nigeria, Commonwealth and Olympic athletes and dignitaries, and I explained to them the wide range of sporting facilities which we are lucky to enjoy in Gibraltar, despite our limited geographical size. The fact that Government is investing very considerable sums in the provision of new sporting facilities, the free-of-charge use of those sports facilities and the increasing resources devoted to sports development programmes was judged extremely positively.”

Other important contacts were made by Mr Vinet with representatives of ‘UK Sport’ and the Scottish Minister for Sport with whom it has been agreed to continue and develop contacts.

Gibraltar's participants will be treated to an opening ceremony which according to, Andrew Walsh, Melbourne 2006 executive producer of ceremonies promises to be “robust” and vibrant”. He said he is confident that millions of TV viewers around the world will see a show “like nothing before”. The Opening Ceremony for the Commonwealth Games at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is on Wednesday night. The Australians showed they know how to provide a spectacle when they hosted the 2000 Olympics.

The Queen and her husband Prince Philip will officially open the Commonwealth Games, for which security has been raised. Their son Prince Edward, along with Prime Minister John Howard and Victorian Pre
mier Steve Bracks are also attending the Opening Ceremony.

Walsh said, “we want people to take away the impression of Melbourne being a creative and vibrant city.

“It’s a ceremony that is not exactly typical of other ceremonies, it’s much more inspirational in its design. It’s very contemporary in a lot of ways. What we want people to take away is a sense of uplift. It’s creative, interesting and very vibrant”.

The Opening Ceremony will feature music performed by the Sydney Orchestra. About 6,000 people have helped to organize the event.

We hope that our participants will enjoy the sporting and ambassadorial role in a games that provides Gibraltar with a great opportunity to show the world, who we are.
