Hockey: Lille Metropoloe and Dinamo Sumchanka promoted in European Cup Winners Cup Trophy held in Gibraltar over the Easter break

The final day of the Women's Cup Winners Cup Trophy was held today in Gibraltar. (click on images to enlarge)

The two teams promoted were the Ukranian team Dinamo Sumchanka and the French team, Lille Metropole, who yesterday struggled to beat the Gibraltarian side Eagles.

The final games were close encounters, with scores of 4-3 for the Ukrainians and 4-2 for the French. The latter of the games was played in some very humid conditions. Both teams however, gave it their all and worked hard to try and push their side to the coveted promotion to the B Division.

After the French game an award ceremony was held, where the Minister for sport attended along with some of the Senior EHF officials.

The tournament was heralded by all as a great event and all those involved in the preparation and running of the event were thanked, from the ball boys to the ground staff. A big thank you should go to all of the Eagles organisers and players who made the event such a success. They are true amabassdors for Gibraltar. Thank you.

Hockey: Lille vs Gibraltar's Eagles ends in a close 3-1 defeat

Eagles Hockey Club (click on image to enlarge) have recently been very busy, for both their senior men and women respectively taking part in European Competitions. The men did really well in Malta coming in third spot and just missing out on promotion. The ladies have had a very tough competition to compete in and had already suffered a 5-0 and 8-0 defeat (results below). Until yesterday, when in front of a supportive crowd they managed to restrict the goal margin to a very respectable 3-1.

Their opponenets were Lille Metropole from France who have been doing very well in the competition. The French team looked stronger from the start and managed to score within the first five minutes. It looked like the local girls were in for a damage limitation exercise. This, however was not so and the girls battled hard in defending their D, with some excellent saves from the Eagles' keeper.

The French team did eventually, manage to squeeze another goal. Shortly after the Eagles seemed to find heart in conceeding what was an unorthodox goal. Eagles began passing more consistently and their possession and territroy increased substantially. This led to a lot of pressure with their opposition's D, which led to a few short corners in the Eagles' favour. The ladies capitalised on this opportunity to score their first Cup Winner's Cup goal, much to their delight and the partisan crowd.

The game continued very much in the same way, with the local girls making several good attacks on the Lille goal. The French however did manage to snatch another goal to make the final score 3-1. Our local girls should be given credit in what was a great example of determination and pride.

In their final game today the girls lost by 3-0 against HC Olten. There is no demotion from the competition so we hope the girls will use this experience to continue working hard and use this experience to further their hockey ambitions.

Minsk, Cardiff win promotion in EuroHockey Cup Winners Challenge
By MM Sports
Apr 8, 2007 -

The Men's BDO EuroHockey Cup Winners Challenge hosted at the Corradino Hockey Complex came to an end today with the final three games.

In the first game HK Zelina beat Seijanoki Utd 4-0 with all four goals coming in the first half. The Croatian goals were scored by Edo Jalzabetic and Nikola Jalzabetic who each scored two.The Croatians also missed two penalty strokes.

The last two games were the matches that decided the promotions. In the first game, RCOR-MIF Minsk surprised favourites Eagles HC from Gibraltar by three goals to two. For the Belorussians it was a positive end to a positive tournament. Stefan Rodriguez put Eagles into the lead after 11 mins from a penalty corner but by the end of the half Minsk had turned the score around with goals from Yauhen Velihon and Allaksand Hancharov.

Eagles came out strongly in the second half and their efforts were rewarded with a goal from penalty corner specialist Gareth Henwood. Things were pointing to extra time until nine minutes from time Allaksand Hancharov got his second goal from a short corner to give promotion to Belorussian side.

The final game of the tournament saw Cardiff University win promotion with a straight forward victory over Slagelse HC from Denmark. An early goal after 7 mins from Martyn White got the ball rolling and a second from the same player before the half time gave Cardiff a two goal cushion. Cardiff, who impressed with their fitness, scored a further two goals from Gavin Vollmer and David Hughes before Slaglese pulled one back through Jesper Sorensen. White notched up his hat-thrick with the fifth goal a minute from time.
With these three goals White equalled Stefan Rodriguez (Eagles HC) as the tournament top scorers while Christian Nielsen (Slagelse HK) was voted Tournament Best Player.
Final Positions were as follows:

1. RCOR-MIF Minsk (Promoted)
1. Cardiff University (Promoted)
3. Eagles HK
3. Slagelse HK
