Rugby: Gibraltar beat CR Malaga by 62-0

Gibraltar Rugby Club scored 62 - 0 against CR Malaga. The convincing win still leaves them in second position, in the Andalucian Regional II A division, behind Portuense.

Gibraltar, will this weekend 17/12/06, have the opportunity to draw level, as the first and seocnd placed teams play each other. The winner of the this contest could essentially decide who the winner of the division will be as a Portuense win would make a four point lead almost insurmountable.

Gibraltar will now have the home advantage and will be eager to put one over their opponents who beat them in the first game of the season.

Read th ematch report from the day:

Gibraltar Rugby registered their third and very convincing win over CR Malaga. The Red and Whites 62-0 win was a very aggressive display of raw power, strength and speed all of which has the Gibraltar team firmly set for next Sundays match against CR Atletico Portuense from Peurto Santa Maria, the league leaders and Gibraltar’s most important game of the season. If they register a win over Portuense then Gibraltar will be sat on top of the Andalucian league.

The forwards, after previous poor performances, had a lot to prove against CR Malaga. A large and powerful pack was picked with the intention of intimidating the opposition, a faster back row selected to secure loose ball and turnover ball in the tackle. The strategy worked and it was not long before the front five dominated line-outs and the scrummage, providing an endless flow of quality possession to the backs.

It was the Gibraltar pack that used the ball the most effectively registering a 20 point lead in as many minutes. Good runs from Ross Eatwell and Paul Howard kept the forwards on the front foot and great support from flankers Chris Lyons and Barry Imms retaining possession.

Fullback Chris Gillighan was soon on the score sheet after a great run, as was Thomas De ‘Wing’ Corbier. Owain Richards took after his name sake Dean Richards and had a storming game at number 8 making strong powerful runs into the Malaga defence. Both new boys Chris Lyons and Owain Richards were soon on the score sheet.

Joey Holliday and Chad Thomson both put in flawless lineout performances and it was the driving maul off of these line outs that spearheaded the Gibraltar pack. Adrian Perera put in a fine performance at hooker and carried the ball well, as did the corner stones of the Gibraltar pack, props Chris Lugnani and Nick Ramagge.

The Malaga team entered the Gibraltar 22 for about 5 minutes after kicking for territory but soon found themselves back in their own half because of the onslaught from the Gibraltar team.

The second half began as did the first. The pack rampant and the backs on fire! James Cook had a storming game at scrum-half and used the boot well, kicking the ball deep into enemy territory to pin back the Malaga defence. Michael Galpin made his debut on the wing, putting in a faultless performance. John Dibb was also in boisterous mood and made some impressive yards in the centres.

It was not long before John Smiths Gibraltar rugby club sponsored by Peninsula Petroleum notched up more points. Ross Eatwell scoring the first of his two tries. Thomas de Corbier crossed for his second try and Chris Gillighan scoring his second of what was the move of the match: Malaga restarted off of a Thomas de Corbier’s try. Barry Imms caught the ball and offloaded to Chris Lyons, quick hands by Chris Lyons feed Owain Richards who passed to Ross Eatwell. Ross passed out wide through the backs to Thomas de Corbier. The diamond support worked to perfection with a pass back inside to Chris Gillighan to run over the white wash for his try. Two tries without the Malaga team touching the ball, magic.

Substitutions were made with Nick Cruz making sniping runs around the flank from the scrum-half position. Dave Jaccobs came into the back line to add some fresh legs to the attack and Gary Primmer also substituted into the back row to sure up possession in the tackle area.

The try fest ended and the result a convincing 62-0 win with Chris Gillighan leading the way with 3 tries, 2 penalty conversions and 3 try conversions amassing 27 individual points, possibly the highest points scored by an individual in a single game for Gibraltar. Thomas de Corbier took 2, as did Ross Eatwell. Paul Howard, Owain Richards and Chris Lyons took 1 try a piece.

Next Sunday will be the decider for this season’s league. John Smiths Gibraltar Rugby Club Sponsored by Peninsula Petroleum lost to CR Atletico Portuense in their first league match. If Gibraltar sponsored by Peninsula Petroleum suffers defeat this Sunday then CR Atletico Portuense will potentially have won the league. But it would seem Gibraltar are now the team on form and have been improving match on match. It should be a great game.
