Basketball: FIBA meetings held in Gibraltar decide Madrid as venue for U18 Euro Champs

FIBA executives from Spain and around Europe, attended a senior meeeting held in Gibraltar. The Spanish officials attended despite Gibraltar being recognised as a seperate entity to the U.K. and Spain in international basketball. This action is contrary to the Spanish Government's ressitance in accpeting Gibraltar as a UEFA member.

John Goncalves (pictured) one of FIBA Europe's most senior members chaired the event.

In the executive comittee meeting held on the morning of the 14th November 06, in Gibraltar, FIBA Europe decided that Madrid will be the site of the next U18 European Championship for men, held on August 3rd-12th. This is just a taste of what is in store for Spain, as the most promising teams in Europe will gather here for EuroBasket 07.

The locations and dates of the national training leagues´ tournaments were among the points determined in the FIBA Europe executive committee meeting. Spain, specifically Madrid, was chosen to organize the U18 European Championship Men. In this competition Spain currently holds the bronze medal, and last summer´s U16 gold medal winning team will participate this year. Young talent such as Pablo Aguilar, Pere Tomás and Ricky Rubio will be put to the test against the biggest competitors on the continent.

The rest of the dates and locations will be the following:

European U16 Women: Valnier (Latvia) - July 27 - August 5
European U18 Women: Novi Sad (Serbia) - July 1-8
European U20 Women: Sofía (Bulgary) - July 13-22
