Rugby Sevens: Gibraltarian team Alchemists reach the semis of the Benidorm 7s, plate competition.

Gibraltar's rugby players made their annual pilgrimage to the Benidorm Rugby Sevens tournament. The event is a prestigious, international event, which attracts many of the elite rugby sevens clubs and (on occasion) nations of the world.

Sevens is the quicker, smaller numbers and time game of rugby, which requires extreme fitness and great rugby skills.

The tournament is held over three days, on the one rugby field, which means that the relatively short games are played in quick succession. The Benidorm Sevens competition is divided into two categories: The first and toughest is the International section, which this year has seen the national sides of Japan, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, New Caledonia, take part as well as the American team Atlantis, which usually features some of its international players and other teams with a mixture of international players and future hopefuls.

The second tier is the club section, which attracts clubs with a pedigree in rugby sevens. Gibraltar choose to play in this competition as to play in the international section would be a little on the overambitious side. The players that went to the competition named themselves The Alchemists and faced some tough opposition against clubs from the U.K. as well as France and Spain.

The Alchemists did not win any of their group stage matches, which meant that they immediately qualified for the Plate tournament, which is basically a mini tournament for the losers of the main club competition.
