Gibraltar has become the first UK Overseas Territory to officially implement 100% Me

Gibraltar has become the first UK Overseas Territory to officially implement 100% Me – UK Sport’s anti-doping education and information programme. The Hon Fabian Vinet, Gibraltar’s Minister for Sport, launched the programme on Friday at an event attended by UK Sport representatives and Shelly Rudman, Winter Olympic silver medallist and 100% Me Ambassador.

UK Sport has been working closely with the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority’s Sport Development Unit in the run-up to the launch, providing advice and guidance on establishing a National Anti-Doping Policy and ensuring that their athletes and governing bodies are compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code and the UNESCO Convention. A number of Gibraltar officials have already been trained up as accredited tutors, and two athlete Ambassadors - swimmer Rachel Fortunato and footballer Matthew Reoch – have also been appointed. 100% Me will now roll-out across all sports in the country.

"We see an important part of our role as helping partner organisations in other countries who perhaps don’t have the necessary infrastructure or resources to get an appropriate education programme in place," said Allison Holloway, Education and Information Manager at UK Sport. "All that is needed is enthusiasm and commitment to the global fight against doping in sport, and Gibraltar has that in abundance.

"The aim now is to work with all UK home countries and crown dependencies to help ensure as all British athletes are getting the information and support they need to make informed decisions about competing drug-free."

Fabian Vinet added: "We take the issue of doping in sport very seriously and want to ensure our athletes fully understand their responsibilities about competing drug-free. 100% Me sends out a strong message to current and future stars about the values and behaviours required to reach the top which will help further build our reputation as a fair sporting nation. I would like to thank UK Sport for their help in launching 100% Me in Gibraltar and I look forward to continuing to work with them in the future."

100% Me was launched in the UK in May 2005, since when around 18,000 athletes have received face-to-face advice with trained experts.
