Fishing: New club record set at South Mole, 4th Outing

9 April
The Mediterranean Shore Angling Club held its fourth outing of the 2006 season at the South Mole on Sunday 9 April. A total of thirty-four eager anglers turned up for the event on a day when light easterly winds was the order of the day. 391 fish were eventually brought to the scales representing the highest total so far this season with White Bream finally making an appearance in some numbers with 45 successfully landed. This compares with 200 fish captured in the equivalent competition last season so, in general terms, an excellent performance by all anglers in general. The South Mole normally provides better catches of Ballan and Painted Wrasse than the Detached Mole and this outing proved to be no exception with a total of 14 caught.

The catch of the day went to Michael Tierney who managed to break the existing Club Record for the Pandora Bream with a specimen fish that tipped the scales at 1.730 kg. This not only secured the new record for Michael but also placed his catch as the heaviest fish of the season to date. Other notable catches were a 1.000kg Common Sea Bream by Reggie Chichon and a 0.930 Pandora Bream by Michael Hernandez.

BothLawrence Sisarello and Arthur Asquez kept up their incredible good form this season with excellent aggregate catches that earned them 520 and 464 points respectively. Lawrence’s catch included no less than 3 Common Sea Bream, a Red Mullet and 5 Two-Banded Bream among his total catch of 32 fish. Arthur’s was almost as impressive with 3 Ballan Wrasse, 1 Painted Wrasse and 7 Two-Banded Bream in his catch of 33 fish. The league championship is turning into a head-to-head between both this anglers as others are, so far, left in their wake.

There was a tie for the Most Number of Species trophy between Reggie Chichon and Manolo Asquez with 9 each. In such an event, the award is given to the angler with the heaviest fish in his catch - Reggie’s Common Sea Bream thus secured the trophy.

The competition results were as follows:

1st Heaviest Fish
M. Tierney
Pandora Bream
1.730 kg
1st Points Aggregate:
L. Sisarello
520 points
2nd Points Aggregate:
A. Asquez
464 points
Most Number of Species:
R. Chichon 9
