Fishing: Medsac's fifth outing from the Detached Mole reels in a 1,520kg Gilthead Bream

30 April
The Mediterranean Shore Angling Club held its fifth outing of the 2006 season at the Detached Mole on Sunday 30 April with thirty-four members turning up for the event. Weather conditions were generally quite favourable with a light easterly wind and overcast sky being in evidence throughout most of the day. The currents pulled strongly at times, particularly on the flow, but this did not deter the anglers from presenting a total of 321 fish at the weighing-in. Not bad compared with the 134 caught in the equivalent competition last season!

Two-Banded Bream were present in substantial numbers with 44, which met the minimum size requirements, being brought to the scales. This represents the highest number caught of this species so far this year. The total number of fish landed after the first five outings stands at 1,513 compared with 739 for last year – well over double the number. Congratulations, therefore, to all Club anglers!

There were three trophies for the heaviest catches of the day. Lawrence Sisarello, who continues in excellent form, secured a double. He won both the 1st and 2nd heaviest fish awards with a Gilthead Bream which weighed-in at 1.520 kg and a Sheepshead Bream of 0.960 kg. The Gilthead Bream now represents the second heaviest fish of the season so far. Well done to Lawrence! The 3rd heaviest fish trophy went to Herbert Viñales with a Common Sea Bream of 0.880 kg. The highest points aggregate was achieved by Lawrence’s direct rival this season – Arthur Asquez. Arthur managed a catch that totalled 346 points which allows both him and Lawrence to continue well ahead of the chasing pack.

The competition results were as follows:

2nd Heaviest Fish:
