Cricket: GCC cut through PGCC to take the Wiggins/Benrimoj Shield

GCC clinched the Wiggins/Benrimoj Shield for the second successive season with a comfortable victory against PGCC at Europa on Sunday. This was the fifth time they lift this trophy thereby making them the most successful Club in the competition. Other winners have been Combined Services and UKCCC who have won it four times each and Grammarians with two successes.

All too easy for GCC.

PGCC occupied the crease first at a cold and very windy Europa Oval and apart from a fine knock of 81 by Prabhu Gautam they had no answer to the wiles of veteran spinners Gary De’Ath and Bob Brooks, and were dismissed for a paltry 143 in 27.3 overs. De’Ath returned figures of 3/14 and Brooks 2/38, whilst young Sebastian Suarez continued to improve with a return of 2/24.

GCC lost the early wicket of Adrian Hewitt before Kieron Ferrary [64] and Steven Gonzalez [57] saw their side home without further lost with 3.3 overs to spare. GCC thus took nineteen points from the game whilst PGCC went home empty handed.

Next Week.
There is one Wiggins/Benrimoj Shield match scheduled for next Saturday when UKCCC take on PGCC at the Europa Oval, starting at 11.00am.
