Fabian Vinet visits Commonwealth Games 2006

The Minister for Sport, Fabian Vinet, has travelled to Melbourne, Australia, in conjunction with the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

During his stay in Melbourne Mr Vinet will be attending the Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ Meeting to be held today.

This meeting is a continuation of those previously held in Edinburgh, Manchester and Athens. The meeting will consist of presentations and discussions of issues of common interest to all Commonwealth countries, including: Health Benefits from Sports Participation; Women in Sport; Capacity for Countries to host Major Events; and Sport and Physical Education in Schools.

Mr Vinet will attend a luncheon today, hosted by the Prime Minister of Australia at which her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be present. Later on, the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games will take place, when Gibraltar’s participants will be parading.
This will naturally be a very proud occasion for our athletes and Mr Vinet will be there to wish them the best of luck on behalf of all of Gibraltar. Mr Vinet, who will be accompanied by Mr Joe Hernandez, Chief Executive of the Sports and Leisure Authority, will also be meeting Mr John Scott, Director of UK Sport, in order to foster the continued support and assistance in relation to sports development and anti-doping expertise and training.

It is expected that other important and beneficial contacts will be made during the stay in Melbourne. Visits are also planned to the Games Village to meet the Gibraltar participants at their accommodation, as well as to the different venues and events at which they will be competing.

Mr Vinet will leave Melbourne on Sunday 19th March and arrives in Gibraltar the following day.
